Chapter 3: The Secret Under Our Home
The next morning, our house no longer felt like home.
It felt like a crime scene.
Yellow tape covered the storage room entrance.
Officers moved through the halls where Lily used to race around in her pajamas.
And I sat at the kitchen table watching Claire drink a cup of tea with both hands wrapped around it.
She looked fragile.
But she was alive.
That was the only thing that mattered.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
Lily stood in the doorway holding one of her old drawings.
“Mommy wants to see my room.””
Claire smiled.
“I would love that.””
Lily walked over and took her hand.
For eighteen months, I had imagined this moment.
Claire coming home.
Lily running into her arms.
Everything going back to normal.
But normal was gone.
Too many secrets had been buried inside our walls.
I followed them upstairs.
Claire stopped outside Lily’s bedroom.
The walls were covered with drawings.
Pictures of our family.
Pictures of places she wanted to visit.
One drawing showed three people holding hands.
A man.
A little girl.
A woman standing far away.
Claire touched it.
“You drew me here?””
Lily nodded.
“I didn’t know where you were.””
Claire knelt down.
“I’m sorry, baby.””
“You came back.””
“Yes.””
“You promise you won’t disappear again?””
Claire looked at her.
And for a moment, she looked terrified.
Then she nodded.
“I promise.””
After Lily went downstairs with a detective, Claire turned to me.
“There’s something else.””
I already knew those words meant my life was about to change again.
“What?””
She walked to the window.
“Before I disappeared, I found documents.””
“What kind of documents?””
“Documents showing someone had been using our house.””
I frowned.
“Using it for what?””
“Storage.””
“Storage?””
She nodded.
“Not furniture. Not supplies.””
She looked at me.
“Files.””
The room felt smaller.
“What files?””
“Financial records.””
I stared.
“My father’s?””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
Claire continued.
“He was hiding money.””
“My father died bankrupt.””
“That’s what everyone thought.””
I ran a hand over my face.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
She reached into the pocket of her sweater and pulled out a small plastic bag.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My father’s.
My heart started pounding.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the hidden room.””
I unfolded it carefully.
There was only one sentence written on it.
*If Claire finds this, she already knows too much.*
My hands went cold.
Below it was a date.
The date was six months before my father died.
And beneath that was a signature.
Not my father’s.
Someone else’s.
Claire watched my face.
“Do you know that name?””
I looked down.
The signature was clear.
*Vanessa Blake.*
I looked toward the hallway.
“She was involved?””
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t think she was working with him.””
“Then why was her name there?””
Before she could answer, we heard shouting downstairs.
Detective Reed.
“Everyone stay where you are!””
Claire and I ran.
Vanessa stood near the front door.
An officer held her phone.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Detective Reed looked at me.
“We traced the message she received.””
“And?””
His expression was serious.
“It came from a number registered to someone who supposedly died three years ago.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
He looked down at his notes.
Then back at me.
“Daniel Carter.””
The room went silent.
“That’s my father.””
Detective Reed nodded.
“I know.””
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Daniel…”
The detective continued.
“But there’s more.””
He handed me a photograph.
A photograph taken yesterday.
Of the hidden room.
I stared at it.
“What am I looking at?””
Detective Reed pointed.
“Look closer.””
I did.
And my blood ran cold.
On the wall behind where Claire had been trapped was a message carved into the concrete.
A message nobody had seen before.
Because it had been covered by the blanket.
May you like
Four words.
*He never left.*
