Chapter 13: The Father Who Came Back
Nobody moved.
Not even Thomas.
He stood in the attic doorway like he had been waiting years for this exact moment.
For my reaction.
For my anger.
For my confusion.
Vanessa was the first person to speak.
“You’re alive.””
Her voice wasn’t full of relief.
It was full of betrayal.
Thomas looked at his daughter.
“I never wanted you involved.””
She laughed quietly.
“Do you know what I wanted?””
He said nothing.
“I wanted a father.””
The words hit harder than any accusation.
Thomas looked away.
For the first time, he didn’t look like a villain.
He looked like an old man carrying too much regret.
But I had learned something in the last two days.
Regret didn’t erase damage.
“Why?”” I asked.
Thomas looked at me.
“Because Robert took you.””
I stepped forward.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to walk into my house after eighteen months of my wife being trapped behind a wall and act like you’re the victim.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
He looked around the attic.
“At least I know what I’ve done.””
Detective Reed moved closer.
“You’re going to explain everything.””
Thomas nodded.
“I will.””
He looked at me.
“But you need to understand the truth first.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then tell me.””
Thomas took a deep breath.
“Robert didn’t steal you because he hated me.””
“Then why?””
“Because he thought he was saving you.””
The room went quiet.
Thomas continued.
“When you were born, your mother was dying.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
He looked at the old photograph.
“She was sick. She knew she wasn’t going to live long.””
I stared.
“Why don’t I know this?””
“Because Robert erased everything.””
My anger returned.
“He raised me.””
“Yes.””
Thomas nodded.
“And I will never take that away from him.””
That surprised me.
“He was wrong. But he loved you.””
The attic fell silent.
Thomas continued.
“Your mother made Robert promise something.””
“What?””
“To protect you from me.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Because I was dangerous.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“I was angry. I was obsessed with winning. I hurt people.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Your mother was afraid I would turn you into someone like me.””
Vanessa looked away.
“So you abandoned me too.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I thought disappearing would keep you safe.””
“It didn’t.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“It didn’t.””
Detective Reed stepped forward.
“Then why come back now?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because the person who destroyed your family is still free.””
My jaw tightened.
“You mean the person who trapped Claire?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked toward the stairs.
Then back at us.
“Robert’s closest ally.””
Nobody spoke.
I thought about the payments.
The records.
The camera.
The ring.
Then I realized.
“Vanessa?””
She looked shocked.
“What?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then who?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“Ethan.””
The room exploded.
“No.””
Ethan’s voice came from the doorway.
He stood there, pale.
“You’re lying.””
Thomas looked at him.
“I wish I was.””
I looked between them.
“You.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
“You knew about the letter.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Claire disappearing.””
“I tried to help her.””
“Then why was your name in the records?””
Ethan froze.
A second.
Only a second.
But it was enough.
Detective Reed noticed too.
“Ethan?””
Ethan looked around.
Then slowly reached into his pocket.
Everyone reacted.
“Don’t move!””
He stopped.
His hand came out empty.
But he was holding a small key.
Thomas stared.
“That key belonged to Robert.””
Ethan looked at me.
“I can explain.””
I felt something inside me break.
Everyone had explanations.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had a reason.
But somehow I was always the last person to know.
“Then explain.””
Ethan looked at Claire.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“I didn’t trap her.””
A pause.
May you like
“I helped him hide her.””
The room went silent.
