Chapter 7: The Recording My Father Left Behind
The hallway beneath our house went completely silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
We all stood there staring at the black laptop screen, waiting for something else to happen.
Another message.
Another voice.
Another impossible secret.
But there was only silence.
Then Detective Reed slowly reached forward and closed the laptop.
“Everyone out.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Now.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever set this up wants us standing exactly where you’re standing.””
His eyes moved through the dark hallway.
“Alone.””
I hated that he was right.
We left the underground passage and returned to the kitchen, where officers surrounded the house.
But my mind was still down there.
My father’s voice.
His words.
*It means I’m already dead.*
I sat across from Claire.
She looked exhausted.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For not telling you.””
I knew she meant everything.
The room.
The fear.
The things she discovered.
The fact that she had spent eighteen months believing I might be part of the danger.
“You thought I was involved.””
She lowered her eyes.
“I thought everyone was.””
I reached across the table.
“Claire.””
She looked up.
“I need you to tell me everything you remember.””
Her fingers tightened around her coffee cup.
“After your father died, I found documents in his office.””
“What kind?””
“Bank records. Property records. Names.””
“Vanessa?””
Claire nodded.
“And another name.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Ethan.””
I froze.
“My brother?””
She nodded.
“Your father was paying him.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
I stood and paced.
“My brother hated him.””
“Maybe.””
Claire looked at me.
“Or maybe he hated what your father was doing.””
Before I could respond, Detective Reed walked in holding a tablet.
“We recovered the video files.””
I turned.
“What did you find?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“That recording wasn’t the only one.””
He placed the tablet on the table.
“There were dozens.””
Claire and I looked at each other.
“Play them.””
The first video showed my father sitting in an office.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if you’re seeing this, something went wrong.””
My chest tightened.
My father continued.
“I spent my entire life believing control was the only way to protect the people I loved.””
I almost laughed.
That sounded exactly like him.
Then his expression changed.
“But I was wrong.””
The video skipped.
The next part showed him standing in the hidden hallway.
“This house was never just a house.””
He placed a folder on the desk.
“It was insurance.””
He opened it.
Inside were documents.
“I discovered someone close to me had been stealing from my company for years.””
Detective Reed leaned closer.
“Watch this.””
My father looked into the camera.
“I know who it is.””
The video froze.
Then resumed.
His voice became quieter.
“But I don’t know if I can stop them.””
A shadow moved behind him.
My father turned.
The video cut off.
I stared at the screen.
“Who was behind him?””
Reed shook his head.
“We’re enhancing the footage.””
Claire touched my arm.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“That wasn’t the worst part.””
“What?””
She pointed at the tablet.
“The date.””
I checked.
The recording had been made one day after my father’s funeral.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“That’s not possible.””
Nobody spoke.
Because we all knew.
Someone had used his voice.
Someone had continued his plan.
Or…
Someone had been pretending he was dead.
The front door suddenly slammed.
Every officer reached for their weapons.
A voice shouted from the hallway.
“Daniel!””
I recognized it instantly.
“Ethan?””
My brother walked into the kitchen.
He looked terrible.
His clothes were dirty.
His face was covered in bruises.
He raised his hands.
“I know what you found.””
Detective Reed stepped forward.
“Stay where you are.””
Ethan ignored him.
He looked at me.
“Dad wasn’t the one who locked Claire away.””
My heart pounded.
“Then who was?””
Ethan looked at Claire.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“The person who killed our father.””
The room froze.
“What did you say?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Dad didn’t die naturally.””
Claire stood.
“What?””
Ethan looked at her.
“He was murdered.””
Nobody moved.
Detective Reed stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Ethan looked at me.
“I came here because I found the person responsible.””
“Who?””
His eyes moved toward the hallway.
And then he said the one name none of us expected.
“Daniel…”
May you like
A pause.
“The person who killed Dad is still living in this house.””
