The Wall That Hid My Wife / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Man in the Shadows

I ran upstairs before anyone could stop me.

“Daniel!””

Detective Reed shouted behind me.

But I didn’t care.

The only thing I saw was Lily.

My daughter.

Alone.

Sleeping.

Exactly where the picture showed her.

I pushed open her bedroom door.

“Lily!””

She woke up immediately.

“Daddy?””

I rushed to her.

She was safe.

No one was there.

The window was locked.

The closet was empty.

I held her tightly.

Behind me, Claire entered.

“Is she okay?””

I nodded.

“She’s okay.””

But I wasn’t.

Because someone had been in this house.

Someone had watched us.

Someone had taken a picture of my daughter.

And they wanted me to know.

Detective Reed searched the room.

“No signs of entry.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

He looked toward the floor.

“Unless they were already inside.””

The words made everyone stop.

The house became silent again.

Not peaceful.

Dangerous.

We searched every room.

Every closet.

Every corner.

Then Ethan found something.

In the attic.

A door.

A door none of us had ever noticed.

“How long has that been there?”” I asked.

He shook his head.

“I’ve never seen it.””

Detective Reed opened it carefully.

Inside was a small room.

Not like the others.

This one was clean.

Maintained.

Someone used it recently.

On the table was a stack of papers.

And a photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed me as a child.

Standing beside Robert Carter.

Behind us was another man.

Thomas Blake.

But there was something written on the back.

*The day I lost my son.*

I dropped it.

Vanessa picked it up.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My father wrote this.””

Claire looked around the room.

“Why would he keep this here?””

Then Ethan pointed.

“Look.””

On the wall were dozens of photographs.

All of me.

From childhood.

From school.

From my wedding.

From the day Lily was born.

A lifetime of moments.

Collected by someone.

Obsessed with someone.

I felt sick.

“He was watching me my whole life.””

Detective Reed examined the photographs.

“He wasn’t just watching.””

“What do you mean?””

He pointed.

“These aren’t taken from outside.””

I looked closer.

The angle.

The lighting.

The backgrounds.

They were taken from inside places.

My old bedroom.

My parents’ house.

Our hospital room.

Someone had access.

Someone had always been close.

Then Claire noticed a folder.

“Daniel.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

My birth records.

And a letter.

This time, the handwriting wasn’t my father’s.

It was Thomas Blake’s.

I unfolded it.

*Daniel,*

*If you found this, then Robert failed to keep you from me.*

My hands shook.

*You spent your whole life believing he saved you. He didn’t. He stole you.*

I kept reading.

*But he was right about one thing. I was dangerous.*

I looked up.

Everyone was silent.

The letter continued.

*I wanted revenge. I wanted Robert to lose everything. But when I saw you, I couldn’t do it.*

My breathing slowed.

*You were my son.*

The final paragraph made my blood run cold.

*The person who trapped Claire was not me.*

I looked at the last line.

*It was the person you trusted most.*

The attic door slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the doorway.

A man.

Older.

Gray hair.

Watching us.

Vanessa whispered:

“Dad?””

The man smiled.

And said:

“Hello, Daniel.””

I couldn’t move.

Because after all the secrets.

After all the lies.

After all the years believing he was gone…

May you like

Thomas Blake was standing in my house.

Alive.
