The Wall That Hid My Wife / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1: The Voice Behind the Door

“Dan?””

The sound of my wife’s voice coming from behind a steel door inside my own house was something my mind refused to accept.

For a second, I forgot how to breathe.

Eighteen months of unanswered questions. Eighteen months of staring at Claire’s empty side of the bed. Eighteen months of telling Lily that Mommy loved her, even when I wasn’t sure if that was true.

And now she was here.

Not in some distant city.

Not in a hospital.

Not in some new life she had chosen without us.

She was behind a wall.

“Claire?”” I whispered.

The steel door trembled.

“Dan… please.””

Lily grabbed my hand so tightly her fingernails pressed into my skin.

“Daddy,” she said, her voice shaking.

“I told you.””

I looked down at my daughter.

She had spent months drawing pictures of our family with four people instead of three. She always left a blank space beside herself.

That space was for Claire.

Vanessa stood several feet away, frozen.

The woman who had comforted me when my wife disappeared.

The woman who had brought casseroles to our doorstep.

The woman who had sat in my kitchen at midnight while I cried into my coffee.

The same woman who had just tried to stop me from opening this wall.

“Vanessa,” I said slowly.

“What is this?””

Her face had lost all its color.

“I can explain.””

I laughed once, but there was nothing funny about it.

“You can explain why my missing wife is locked behind a hidden door?””

“Daniel, lower your voice.””

“Lower my voice?””

I pointed at the door.

“My wife is behind that door.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You don’t know what you’re walking into.””

“I know exactly what I’m walking into. I’m walking into eighteen months of lies.””

She flinched.

That reaction told me more than words could.

I grabbed the hammer again.

“Move away.””

“Daniel—”

“Move.””

She stared at me for a long moment, then slowly stepped aside.

I hit the lock area.

Once.

Twice.

The sound echoed through the storage room.

Lily covered her ears.

“Daddy, don’t hurt Mommy.””

I stopped.

The hammer hung in my hand.

“I’m not going to hurt her, sweetheart.””

I knelt beside her.

“I’m bringing her home.””

A weak voice came from behind the door.

“Lily?””

My daughter gasped.

“Mommy?””

The tiny word broke something inside me.

I hit the lock again.

Metal cracked.

The door opened only an inch before something heavy pushed against it from the other side.

I shoved with all my strength.

The door finally swung inward.

The smell hit me first.

Damp concrete.

Dust.

Something stale.

My flashlight shook as I aimed it into the darkness.

There was a small room behind the wall.

Not a closet.

Not a storage area.

A room.

A hidden room.

A thin mattress sat in the corner. There were empty water bottles stacked against the wall. A blanket lay folded on the floor.

And sitting against the concrete wall was Claire.

Her hair was shorter.

Her face was thinner.

She looked like someone who had aged ten years in eighteen months.

But it was her.

My wife.

“Claire.””

I dropped the hammer.

She looked at me like she wasn’t sure I was real.

Then her eyes moved past me.

To Lily.

“Baby…”

Lily ran.

I barely had time to move before my daughter threw herself into Claire’s arms.

The sound Claire made wasn’t a cry.

It was something deeper.

Like a person finally being allowed to breathe after drowning.

“My baby,” she whispered.

“My beautiful baby.””

I stood there, unable to move.

Then I heard Vanessa behind me.

“Daniel, you need to listen to me.””

I turned.

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“You locked my wife in a room.””

“I didn’t lock her in there.””

“Then who did?””

Vanessa looked toward Claire.

And for the first time since I met her, I saw fear in her eyes.

“Your wife did not disappear because she wanted to leave.””

Claire slowly looked up.

Her arms tightened around Lily.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

“What?””

“She knows.””

I looked between them.

“Knows what?””

Claire swallowed.

“Why I went missing.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From who?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Claire looked at the doorway.

At Vanessa.

And said something that made my blood turn cold.

“Daniel… she wasn’t helping you after I disappeared.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was replacing me.””
