The Wall That Hid My Wife / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Woman Who Stayed

The police arrived forty minutes later.

I didn’t remember calling them.

I only remembered sitting on the floor beside Claire while Lily refused to let go of her.

Every time Claire tried to move, Lily grabbed her sleeve.

As if eighteen months of losing her had taught her that people could vanish when you looked away.

Detective Marcus Reed stood in the hidden room doorway, taking notes.

“Mrs. Carter,” he said gently, “can you tell me how long you were kept here?””

Claire stared at the concrete floor.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

She shook her head.

“There were no windows. No clock. Vanessa controlled everything.””

My stomach twisted.

Vanessa.

She sat in the living room with another officer nearby.

The same living room where she had sat beside me and told me not to blame myself.

The same couch where she had cried with me over Claire.

I walked toward her.

She looked up.

“Daniel.””

I stopped.

“How long?””

Her lips parted.

“Daniel, please.””

“How long did you know she was here?””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“I didn’t want this.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

She looked down.

And that was when I knew.

“You knew.””

“Not at first.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Explain.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“After Claire disappeared, I found out she had discovered something.””

“What?””

“She found out about the renovation.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

“The wall wasn’t supposed to exist.””

The detective stepped closer.

“Ms. Blake, start from the beginning.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“I was hired to manage the renovations. Claire was suspicious because the original blueprints didn’t match the work being done.””

“By who?”” Detective Reed asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

“Her brother.””

I stared.

“Ethan?””

Claire looked up sharply.

“No.””

The fear in her voice made everyone turn.

“No, Daniel. Not Ethan.””

“Then who?””

Claire’s face changed.

Like she had spent eighteen months trying to forget a name.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

My father had been dead for three years.

I laughed quietly.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at me.

“I wish it was.””

I remembered the arguments.

My father criticizing our house.

Saying it was too expensive.

Saying Claire was too curious.

I remembered how angry he became when Claire wanted to see the renovation plans.

But dead people couldn’t lock their daughter-in-law behind walls.

Could they?

Detective Reed looked at Vanessa.

“You said you found out about this after the disappearance.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Claire called me the night she vanished.””

Claire looked away.

“She promised she wouldn’t tell Daniel.””

“Tell me what?”” I asked.

Claire closed her eyes.

“The room.””

The words hung there.

“I found it during the renovation. I found evidence someone had been using it.””

I looked around the hidden space.

“You found this?””

She nodded.

“But I didn’t know who.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Her expression broke.

“Because I thought you were involved.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

“What?””

“You and your father were fighting about money. About the house. About the inheritance.””

“That doesn’t mean—”

“I know that now.””

Claire reached for my hand.

“But at the time, I was terrified.””

I looked away.

The woman I loved had been trapped in a room because she was afraid of me.

Then Vanessa spoke softly.

“She wasn’t supposed to be locked in there.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”” Detective Reed asked.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I found Claire inside after she disappeared.””

“When?””

“Three days after the email.””

My chest tightened.

“You found my wife three days after she vanished?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Claire.

“Because the person who put her there came back.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“Who?”” I asked.

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

She stared at the screen.

Then all the blood drained from her face.

Detective Reed stepped forward.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa slowly turned the phone around.

The message was from an unknown number.

Only six words.
