The Wall That Hid My Wife / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Name in the Old Records

The police searched the house until sunrise.

Nobody slept.

Not me.

Not Claire.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Lily, who refused to leave Claire’s side.

The strangest part was the silence.

After everything we discovered, I expected chaos.

Screaming.

Accusations.

Something.

Instead, everyone moved carefully, like the house itself was listening.

At six in the morning, Detective Reed found me sitting on the front steps.

“You should get some rest.””

I almost laughed.

“My wife was trapped in a room for eighteen months, and someone who might be my dead father is sending messages from beyond the grave.””

Reed sat beside me.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

He looked at me.

“I know enough to understand why you can’t sleep.””

For the first time since this nightmare started, I appreciated that he wasn’t pretending everything could be fixed easily.

“What do you think happened?”” I asked.

He looked at the house.

“I think someone wanted you to believe Claire abandoned you.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

“Because you would stop looking.””

The answer was simple.

And terrifying.

Someone didn’t just hide Claire.

Someone created a story.

The email.

The car.

The disappearance.

Everything.

They wanted me to mourn someone who was still alive.

I stood.

“Find out who.””

Reed looked at me.

“We’re trying.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I need the truth.””

He studied me for a moment.

Then handed me a folder.

“We found these in your father’s old financial records.””

I opened it.

The first page was a list of payments.

Large payments.

The names were hidden behind account numbers.

But one name appeared repeatedly.

*B. Blake.*

I looked up.

“Vanessa.””

Reed nodded.

“She told us she wasn’t involved.””

“Do you believe her?””

“I believe people can be involved in things they don’t understand.””

I closed the folder.

“I need to talk to her.””

Vanessa was sitting in the dining room when I walked in.

She looked exhausted.

Older.

Different from the woman who had smiled at me after Claire disappeared.

“Daniel.””

I placed the folder on the table.

She saw the name.

Her face changed.

“I can explain.””

“Everyone says that.””

She looked away.

“My father hired you.””

I nodded.

“Years ago.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

She closed her eyes.

“Your father was building something.””

“A secret room?””

“More than that.””

I sat across from her.

“What was he doing?””

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she whispered:

“He was collecting evidence.””

“Against who?””

“Everyone.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father believed people were trying to take everything from him.””

“That sounds like him.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“But he was right about one thing.””

“What?””

“He knew someone close to him was dangerous.””

I leaned forward.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she pulled a small envelope from her purse.

“I kept this because I didn’t know who to trust.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Something Claire left behind.””

My heart jumped.

“Where did you get that?””

“The night she disappeared.””

I stood so quickly the chair scraped the floor.

“You had this the entire time?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of who?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Of the same person Claire was afraid of.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Claire’s handwriting.

My hands trembled as I read.

*Daniel, if you’re reading this, I failed to get away. Do not trust anyone who says they were trying to help me. The person behind this is someone we both know. Someone who has been inside our home.*

My heart pounded.

At the bottom of the page was one final line.

*And Daniel… I’m sorry I never told you the truth about Lily.*

I stopped breathing.

“Lily?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because behind me, a small voice spoke.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

Lily stood in the doorway.

Holding another piece of paper.

“Mommy said I wasn’t supposed to show anyone.””

My blood went cold.

“Show me what?””

She walked closer.

“It was hidden in my room.””

She handed it to me.

It was a drawing.

A child’s drawing.

A picture of our family.

But this time, there were four people.

Me.

Claire.

Lily.

And another man.

Above the man, Lily had written a name.

A name she had never learned.

May you like

A name that made my entire body freeze.

*Grandpa.*
