Chapter 9: The Child Who Found the Truth

I ran before I even realized I was moving.

“Lily!””

The hallway seemed endless.

My feet hit the floor harder with every step.

I reached the living room.

She was standing there.

Awake.

Holding something in her tiny hands.

My heart nearly stopped.

“Daddy.””

I dropped to my knees.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

But her eyes were fixed on the hidden passage.

“Someone was talking.””

I looked behind her.

The passage door was open.

It had been closed.

I was sure of it.

“Who?””

Lily held up what she was carrying.

A small wooden box.

Where had she gotten it?

I took it carefully.

“What is this?””

She shrugged.

“My friend gave it to me.””

I looked toward Michael.

His face changed.

“Where did he find that?””

Lily pointed.

“Behind the loose brick.””

I turned to Michael.

“You knew about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I opened the box.

Inside was a small key.

And a folded piece of paper.

My hands were shaking.

I unfolded it.

It was my father’s handwriting again.

Daniel,

If you found this, then Richard has already discovered the first hiding place.

There is only one thing left.

The truth about your mother.

I froze.

My mother.

A woman who had died when I was young.

A woman nobody talked about.

I looked at Michael.

“What does this mean?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t know.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Daniel…”

I turned.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“I never told you because your father asked me not to.””

I stared.

“You knew about my mother?””

She nodded.

“Some of it.””

The anger returned.

“Everyone knows things about my family except me.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

I held up the paper.

“My entire life has been built on secrets.””

Lily walked closer.

“Daddy?””

I immediately softened.

I crouched beside her.

“I’m okay.””

She looked at the box.

“Can we help him?””

I frowned.

“Help who?””

She pointed toward the hidden room.

“My friend.””

Michael looked away.

His eyes filled with emotion.

I understood then.

To Lily, he wasn’t a mystery.

He wasn’t a secret.

He was just someone who was hungry.

Someone who needed help.

Someone she believed deserved kindness.

I opened the small box again.

Under the key was another message.

One sentence.

My father’s final warning.

“Richard did not kill me alone.””

I felt the room tilt.

Not alone.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Michael whispered:

“There was someone else.””

The lights suddenly went out.

The house became completely dark.

Lily screamed.

I grabbed her.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

A sound came from the front door.

A slow knock.

Three times.

Nobody moved.

Then a voice spoke from the other side.

A woman’s voice.

A voice I had never heard before.

“Daniel?””

I froze.

Because Vanessa had turned completely white.

She whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Who is that?””

Her lips trembled.

May you like

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“That’s your mother.””
