Chapter 11: The Message That Started It All

Nobody spoke after my mother’s words.

Not even Vanessa.

She stood frozen in the middle of the room.

Like she had forgotten how to defend herself.

I looked at her.

“Is it true?””

She shook her head.

“Daniel—”

“Is it true?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know what would happen.””

The answer wasn’t a denial.

I felt something break inside me.

“You told Richard where my father was.””

“I thought he was only going to scare him.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“People always say that after someone gets hurt.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was trapped.””

I stepped between them.

“Tell me.””

She looked at me.

For once, she didn’t hide.

“Richard came to me after Michael disappeared.””

The room went quiet.

“He told me Michael had betrayed him.””

Michael stared.

“That’s a lie.””

“I know that now.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“But at the time, I believed him.””

She looked at me.

“He showed me documents. He showed me messages.””

“Fake ones?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“So you helped him.””

“I did.””

Her voice became smaller.

“I thought I was helping stop something dangerous.””

My mother looked at her.

“You never checked.””

Vanessa looked away.

“No.””

Silence.

Then Lily walked into the room.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Why is everyone sad?””

Everyone froze.

I immediately knelt.

“Sweetheart…”

She looked at Vanessa.

“Are you leaving?””

That question hurt.

Because even after everything, Lily was worried about losing her mother.

Vanessa dropped to her knees.

“I don’t know.””

Lily hugged her.

And Vanessa started crying.

Not the controlled tears she had used before.

Real ones.

Broken ones.

I looked away.

Because I didn’t know what to feel anymore.

My mother approached me quietly.

“There is one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Your father left more than files.””

“What else?””

“A confession.””

I frowned.

“About what?””

She looked toward the hidden room.

“About the night he died.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Where is it?””

My mother reached into her coat.

She pulled out an old envelope.

“I kept this hidden for years.””

My hands shook as I took it.

Inside was a handwritten statement.

I read the first line.

I, Robert Hayes, am responsible for what happened.

I stopped.

My father’s name.

Responsible.

I continued.

I made choices that hurt people. I trusted money more than morality. I allowed Richard to become someone I could no longer control.

My chest tightened.

Then the next sentence made me stop.

But I did not betray Michael Reed.

I did not betray my family.

Someone else did.

I looked at my mother.

“Who?””

She looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

Michael pointed at the paper.

I did.

The final paragraph was short.

Too short.

If you find this, it means the person who betrayed me is still alive.

They know where the last evidence is.

And they will do anything to destroy it.

I lowered the paper.

“The last evidence.””

My mother nodded.

“The thing Richard has been searching for.””

“What is it?””

She looked at me.

“A recording.””

“Of what?””

Her expression changed.

“Your father’s final conversation.””

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Nobody moved.

I answered.

A distorted voice came through.

“Daniel.””

I recognized it.

Richard.

My grip tightened.

“What do you want?””

A quiet laugh.

“You found your mother.””

I looked around.

“How do you know that?””

“Because I’m watching.””

My blood went cold.

The room became silent.

Richard continued.

“You should ask her why she came back now.””

I looked at my mother.

“What?””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“Because she didn’t come back to save you.””

A pause.

“She came back because she knows where the final recording is.””

The call ended.

I stared at my mother.

May you like

And for the first time since she returned…

I wondered if she was telling the truth.
