Chapter 14: The Truth Michael Never Told

I stared at the photograph.

Michael standing beside Richard.

A date was visible in the corner.

Two years after Michael supposedly disappeared.

My mind struggled to process it.

“No.””

Michael looked at me.

“What?””

I turned the phone around.

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

“You know this picture.””

Silence.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

“You lied.””

Michael shook his head.

“Daniel, listen.””

“No.””

My voice echoed.

“You spent all this time telling me about betrayal.””

I pointed at the photo.

“And you were working with him?””

Michael looked exhausted.

“I wasn’t working with him.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then my mother.

Then finally at me.

“I was trying to get close to him.””

“For what?””

“To destroy him.””

I laughed.

“That’s convenient.””

“It’s the truth.””

“Everyone here has a version of the truth.””

I looked at Lily.

She was watching again.

Confused.

Afraid.

I lowered my voice.

“Tell me everything.””

Michael sat down.

“I met Richard before your father died.””

“When?””

“Months earlier.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew he was planning something.””

Michael looked at the photograph.

“That picture was taken when I was pretending to work with him.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Pretending?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I needed Richard to believe I was still on his side.””

I shook my head.

“You let everyone think you were dead.””

He looked at the floor.

“I had no choice.””

“You had a choice.””

His eyes filled with anger.

“You don’t know what it’s like to have someone control your entire life.””

The words hit me.

Because he was right.

I didn’t.

But neither did Lily.

And she had still chosen kindness.

I looked away.

“What did Richard want?””

Michael answered quietly.

“The final evidence.””

“The recording?””

“Yes.””

“But he already knew about it.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“He knew something existed.””

“Then why did he keep you alive?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because I was the only person who knew where your father hid the backup.””

I felt cold.

“The backup?””

Michael nodded.

“The recorder wasn’t the only copy.””

Everyone froze.

My mother whispered:

“Where?””

Michael looked toward Lily.

My daughter.

I immediately stepped in front of her.

“No.””

Michael raised his hands.

“Daniel, listen.””

“No one uses my daughter to find anything.””

He nodded.

“I agree.””

“Then why are you looking at her?””

Michael looked heartbroken.

“Because your father trusted her.””

“What does that mean?””

Michael pointed at the wall.

“The hiding place wasn’t made for adults.””

I remembered.

The bread.

The gap beneath the shelf.

The small spaces only a child could reach.

My father had built something my daughter could find.

Not me.

Not Vanessa.

Lily.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, from Richard.

Bring me the backup.

Or your daughter learns what happens when people keep secrets.

My blood turned to ice.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“He knows where we are.””

I looked around.

The house suddenly felt exposed.

Every window.

Every door.

Every shadow.

Then the lights went out.

Again.

A crash came from upstairs.

Lily screamed.

I ran.

“Lily!””

I reached the hallway.

Her bedroom door was open.

The window was broken.

Cold air rushed inside.

And on her bed was a note.

I picked it up.

Three words.

You were too slow.

I turned around.

On the floor near the window was something else.

A small piece of fabric.

And attached to it…

A gold button.

I knew that button.

Because I had seen it on someone’s coat.

Someone standing in my house.

Someone who claimed to be helping me.

I walked downstairs slowly.

Everyone looked at me.

I held up the button.

May you like

My voice barely worked.

“Who owns this?””
