Chapter 10: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
The knock came again.
Three slow taps.
The entire house held its breath.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she had seen a ghost.
Maybe because she had.
“My mother is dead,” I whispered.
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She just stared at the front door.
Michael stepped closer.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me this isn’t possible.””
He didn’t.
That was the worst part.
The lock on the front door turned.
Everyone froze.
I pulled Lily behind me.
The door opened slowly.
A woman stood on the other side.
Older.
Gray hair.
A tired face.
But the eyes…
I knew those eyes.
I had seen them in old photographs.
I had seen them looking back at me from a childhood picture frame.
My knees almost gave out.
“Mom?””
The word came out as a whisper.
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
My entire life, I had believed one thing.
My mother died when I was six years old.
A car accident.
That was the story.
My father told me.
Everyone told me.
But the woman standing in front of me was alive.
Lily peeked around me.
“Daddy?””
I didn’t answer.
My mother looked at her.
Then she smiled sadly.
“You have his eyes.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
She flinched.
“I know this is impossible.””
“You’re dead.””
“I know what you were told.””
“Because it was true.””
Her face changed.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
“No, Daniel.””
She stepped inside.
“It wasn’t.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“You can’t be here.””
My mother looked at her.
“You knew this day would come.””
I turned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked away.
My mother closed the door.
“Daniel, you need to sit down.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I’ve been sitting down while everyone around me lies.””
Nobody spoke.
I pointed toward Vanessa.
“My wife knew you were alive?””
My mother looked at her.
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“How long?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Since before we met.””
The answer hit harder than I expected.
I felt dizzy.
“You knew my mother was alive?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
A broken sound.
“Everyone says that.””
My mother stepped closer.
“Daniel, your father wasn’t protecting you.””
I looked at her.
“He loved me.””
“He did.””
“Then why did he lie?””
She looked toward the hidden room.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Of Richard?””
She nodded.
“Of Richard. Of what Richard knew.””
Michael crossed his arms.
“What about you?””
My mother looked at him.
“I made mistakes.””
The room went silent.
Then she said:
“I was the person who found the first evidence.””
“What evidence?””
She looked at me.
“The evidence that your father and Richard were involved in illegal operations.””
My jaw tightened.
“My father?””
She nodded slowly.
“But your father tried to stop it.””
I thought about the video.
The letter.
The warning.
“What happened?””
My mother sat down.
“I discovered Richard was using your father’s company to move money.””
Michael nodded.
“That’s what I found.””
My mother looked at him.
“And when Richard realized we knew…”
She stopped.
“Continue.””
Her eyes moved toward Lily.
“He threatened our family.””
My hands curled into fists.
“So you faked your death?””
She nodded.
“To protect you.””
“And left me with him?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I thought your father could keep you safe.””
I shook my head.
“He lied to me.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“He did.””
That honesty hurt more than another excuse.
Then Michael stepped forward.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed at my mother.
“You never told him why you really disappeared.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I was waiting for the right time.””
“There was no right time.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel…”
My heart raced.
“What?””
She whispered:
“Your father didn’t die because Richard wanted him silent.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
She looked toward Vanessa.
“Because someone else betrayed him.””
The room became cold.
I looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“No.””
My mother continued.
“Someone close to him gave Richard the location of the files.””
“Who?””
My mother looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
And finally said:
“The person who knew where everything was hidden was your wife.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“That’s not true.””
My mother stood.
“I saw the message you sent.””
Vanessa went still.
“What message?””
May you like
My mother’s voice became quiet.
“The one that told Richard your father was alone.””
