Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything
The flash drive sat on the kitchen table for ten minutes before anyone touched it.
Ten minutes of silence.
Ten minutes of everyone pretending they weren’t terrified.
Finally, I plugged it into my laptop.
The screen lit up.
One folder.
One file.
No name.
Just a date.
The day before my father died.
I stared at it.
My father had known something would happen.
He had prepared for it.
He had left a trail.
And somehow, every trail led back to Vanessa.
I clicked the file.
A video appeared.
My father was sitting behind his desk.
Older than I remembered.
Tired.
His face carried a sadness I had never seen before.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel.””
My heart cracked hearing his voice.
I hadn’t heard it in five years.
“If you’re watching this, then I failed.””
I covered my mouth.
The video continued.
“I want you to know something first.””
My father leaned closer.
“Everything I did wrong was my responsibility.””
He paused.
“But what happened next was not my choice.””
The video flickered.
Then my father said:
“Vanessa came to me three years ago.””
Everyone in the kitchen froze.
Vanessa looked away.
My father continued.
“She told me she needed help.””
The room felt smaller.
“She said Richard was threatening her.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She whispered:
“I told you.””
I ignored her.
The video played.
“At first, I believed her.””
My father sighed.
“I thought she was another victim.””
A pause.
“Then I discovered she was helping him.””
I felt my hands tighten.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“She wasn’t trapped by Richard.””
Silence.
“She was working with him.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
The video continued.
“She helped Richard access my accounts. She helped him hide evidence. She helped him destroy people’s lives.””
My father looked down.
“But then she changed.””
That surprised me.
He continued.
“I believe Vanessa regretted what she did.””
Vanessa looked up.
Tears filled her eyes.
“But regret does not erase damage.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Michael said:
“Now you understand.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Were you working with him?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her shoulders dropped.
“Yes.””
The word barely left her mouth.
Lily was asleep in the other room.
Thank God.
Because I didn’t know how I would explain this to my daughter.
“How long?””
“Six months.””
I stared.
“Six months?””
She nodded.
“I was desperate.””
“For what?””
She looked at me.
“To protect myself.””
I laughed bitterly.
“By destroying my family?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I thought I could control it.””
Michael shook his head.
“You never controlled Richard.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I know.””
The anger in his voice was clear.
“You knew what he was doing.””
“I was trying to stop him.””
“After helping him.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
I wanted to be angry.
But all I could feel was exhaustion.
“Why Michael?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because he found out.””
“Found out what?””
She looked toward the hidden room.
“That Richard was planning to kill your father.””
The words landed like a weapon.
I stared.
“What?””
Michael nodded.
“I found the plan.””
My breathing stopped.
“And Vanessa?””
“She knew.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I tried to warn him.””
“But you didn’t.””
She looked at me.
“I was too late.””
The room went silent.
Then my laptop made a sound.
A notification.
The video file had not closed.
Another folder had appeared.
None of us touched the computer.
But a new file was there.
Created moments ago.
A live recording.
I clicked it.
The screen showed a camera feed.
My house.
The hallway.
The hidden passage.
Someone was watching us.
Then a voice came through the speakers.
Richard.
“Congratulations, Daniel.””
My blood froze.
“You finally found the truth.””
The camera moved.
Slowly.
Showing the living room.
Showing Lily asleep.
My entire body went cold.
Richard continued.
“But you’re still missing the most important part.””
The camera zoomed closer.
To my daughter.
“She knows where the last file is.””
I stood up.
“No.””
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
The voice continued.
“Ask your daughter what she found behind the wall.””
The screen went black.
May you like
And from the hallway came a sound.
A door opening.
