Chapter 2: The Room That Wasn't There

The bookcase opened three inches.

That was all.

Three inches.

But it was enough to change everything I thought I knew about my own house.

I grabbed Lily and pulled her behind me.

“Vanessa,” I said quietly.

“What is behind that wall?””

She didn’t answer.

The silence was worse than any confession.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips parted.

“I can explain.””

I stared at her.

“Explain why there’s a person inside our wall?””

“I said I can explain.””

The bookcase creaked again.

A smell drifted into the hallway.

Damp wood.

Dust.

And something else.

Something like an old basement that had been sealed shut for years.

Lily peeked around my side.

“Don’t scare him, Daddy.””

I looked down.

“Who?””

“The man.””

My stomach twisted.

“What man?””

She whispered:

“The one Mommy told me not to talk to.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Lily!””

My daughter flinched.

That reaction hurt more than the slap.

I had seen fear in children before.

But never fear of their own mother.

I stepped closer to Vanessa.

“Why did you tell her not to talk to him?””

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“Then what did you mean?””

She looked toward the bookcase.

“He’s dangerous.””

The voice behind the wall came again.

“Lily...””

My entire body went still.

The voice sounded weak.

Painfully weak.

But there was something familiar about it.

“Who are you?”” I called.

No answer.

Only breathing.

Then:

“Please... don’t let her take Lily away.””

Vanessa immediately grabbed my arm.

“Don’t listen to him.””

I pulled away.

“Who is he?””

“He’s lying.””

“Who?””

She looked terrified now.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“Daniel, you need to trust me.””

I almost laughed.

Trust her?

After watching her hit our daughter?

After finding someone hidden inside our house?

“I don’t know if I can.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“After everything I’ve done for this family?””

I looked at Lily.

“Everything?””

Vanessa looked away.

I grabbed the edge of the bookcase and pulled.

It barely moved.

There was some kind of hidden mechanism behind it.

Something built into the wall.

I had lived in this house for six years.

I had walked past this hallway every single day.

And somehow, there had been a secret room inches away from me.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said.

“Stop.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re opening.””

I looked at her.

“Neither do you.””

That was when she went silent.

The silence told me everything.

I pushed harder.

The hidden lock finally released.

The bookcase swung open.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

The walls were unfinished.

Old pipes ran along the ceiling.

A single light bulb flickered at the end.

Lily squeezed my hand.

“Is he okay?””

I looked down at her.

“You’ve been coming here?””

She nodded.

“When Mommy was sleeping.””

My heart dropped.

“How long?””

She counted on her fingers.

“Lots of nights.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“Lots of nights?””

She looked away.

I stepped into the passage.

“Daniel, don’t.””

I ignored her.

The hallway was barely wide enough for my shoulders.

Every step made dust fall from the ceiling.

At the end was a small room.

And inside that room was a man.

He was sitting against the wall.

Thin.

Pale.

His wrists were wrapped with old bandages.

But he was alive.

When he saw Lily, tears filled his eyes.

“Thank God.””

Lily ran forward.

I grabbed her before she reached him.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at Vanessa.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Then he whispered:

“You really never told him, did you?””

Vanessa stepped into the doorway.

“Don’t listen to him.””

The man looked back at me.

“Daniel... my name is Michael.””

I felt my face go numb.

Because I knew that name.

Everyone knew that name.

Michael Reed.

May you like

Vanessa’s first husband.

The man who had supposedly died eight years ago.
