Chapter 13: The Betrayal Hidden Beneath the Truth

The recorder slipped from my hand.

It hit the wooden floor with a sound that felt louder than an explosion.

My mother.

Those two words echoed in my mind.

My mother was the person who betrayed my father.

The woman who had walked back into my life after twenty years.

The woman I had spent my entire childhood mourning.

The woman who had looked at me with tears in her eyes and told me she had disappeared to protect me.

I stared at her.

She looked broken.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Broken.

“Say something,” I whispered.

She didn’t.

“Mom.””

Her eyes lifted to mine.

“I can explain.””

My chest tightened.

Everyone had said those words.

Everyone.

I took a step back.

“No.””

She reached toward me.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Lily stood nearby, watching.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood pain.

She moved closer to me.

I immediately pulled her into my arms.

My mother looked at her.

Then looked away.

“I never wanted any of this.””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“But you caused it.””

She looked at him.

“You don’t know what I went through.””

Michael laughed quietly.

“Neither did I.””

The room became heavy.

I picked up the recorder again.

“Why did Dad say it was you?””

My mother sat down.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not just older.

Tired.

Like she had spent years carrying something too heavy.

“Because I did betray him.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“What?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“But not the way you think.””

I stared.

“Then explain.””

She nodded.

“Your father discovered Richard’s crimes before anyone else. He wanted to expose him.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

“Because Richard had insurance.””

“What kind?””

My mother looked at Vanessa.

“Me.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

“Richard knew about my past.””

The room went quiet.

My mother continued.

“Before I met your father, I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people. I signed documents without understanding what I was signing.””

Michael frowned.

“Richard used you.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“He threatened to reveal everything and make it look like I was part of the crimes.””

I swallowed.

“So you helped him?””

She nodded.

“I gave him information.””

The words hurt.

“But I thought I could control the damage.””

Michael shook his head.

“You always think that.””

She looked at him.

“And you think you’re better?””

He looked away.

Because he knew she was right.

I stepped closer.

“What information?””

My mother looked down.

“I told him where your father kept certain files.””

My stomach dropped.

“Did you know he was going to kill him?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

“No, Daniel.””

She looked at me desperately.

“I swear.””

I wanted to believe her.

I wanted someone in this house to tell the truth completely.

“But after Dad died, you disappeared.””

She nodded.

“Because Richard came after me.””

“Then why fake your death?””

“Because I found out he was going to come after you next.””

I looked at Lily.

My daughter.

My reason.

My weakness.

My mother saw my expression.

“That’s why I stayed away.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“You stayed away to protect me?””

“Yes.””

“Do you know what it was like growing up thinking you abandoned me?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

“No, you don’t.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

“You missed birthdays. School events. Every moment.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

“You don’t get those years back.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know, Daniel.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

“I need to tell him something too.””

I looked at her.

She held a small envelope.

“I kept this for years.””

“What is it?””

She handed it to me.

“Your father gave it to me before he died.””

I stared.

“You had another letter?””

She nodded.

“He told me to give it to you when the truth came out.””

I opened it.

The handwriting was familiar.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then Vanessa finally found the courage to tell you.

I stopped.

Vanessa started crying.

The letter continued.

She betrayed me. But she was not the reason I lost everything.

I looked at Vanessa.

My father knew.

He knew everything.

The final lines made my heart stop.

The person who destroyed our family was not the person who made the mistake.

It was the person who benefited from it.

And Richard was not working alone.

I looked up.

“Who else was involved?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

You’re finally asking the right question.

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

A photograph of Richard.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been helping us all along.

May you like

My blood went cold.

Because the person standing next to Richard was Michael.
