Chapter 4: The Number Saved Under My Father’s Name
The phone continued ringing in Vanessa’s hand.
My father’s name glowed on the screen.
“Dad.””
One word.
One name.
One impossible thing.
My father had been dead for five years.
I stared at Vanessa.
“Why is my father calling you?””
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
“It’s not what you think.””
I almost laughed.
That sentence had become the soundtrack of the last hour.
Not what I think.
Not what it looks like.
Not what you think happened.
But every time Vanessa said those words, another piece of my life fell apart.
“Answer it,” I said.
She looked at me.
“Daniel—”
“Answer it.””
The ringing stopped.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then the phone started ringing again.
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
Toward Lily.
Then back at me.
She knew she was trapped.
Slowly, she pressed the green button.
She didn’t put it on speaker.
I stepped closer.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
A voice I didn’t recognize.
“Is he there?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“No.””
The lie came too quickly.
My stomach twisted.
The man continued.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then:
“You need to get rid of him before he finds the documents.””
My heart stopped.
Documents.
“What documents?”” I asked loudly.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
The man on the phone went silent.
Then he said:
“Who’s that?””
I grabbed the phone from her hand.
“This is Daniel.””
Another silence.
Longer this time.
Then the man whispered:
“Damn it.””
I felt cold.
“Who are you?””
The call ended.
I looked at the dead screen.
Then at Vanessa.
“You’re going to explain everything.””
She didn’t answer.
“Now.””
Her face hardened.
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
I looked back at Michael.
A man who had spent years trapped behind my living room wall.
A man my daughter had been secretly feeding.
“I think I understand more than you want me to.””
Vanessa walked past me.
“You have no idea who Michael is.””
Michael laughed quietly from the room.
“Funny.””
Vanessa turned.
“Shut up.””
The way she said it made Lily’s reaction suddenly make sense.
This wasn’t a wife defending herself.
This was someone used to controlling everyone around her.
I followed her into the living room.
“Who was that man?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She finally turned.
“Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””
My chest tightened.
“Don’t talk about my father.””
“You worshipped him.””
“Because he was a good man.””
Her expression changed.
Almost like pity.
“You believed everything he told you.””
I stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward the hidden room.
“Michael knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That your father helped me.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“My father helped you imprison your first husband?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not like that.””
I waited.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had been carrying this secret for years.
“Michael found out something about your family.””
I stared at her.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“Your father stole money from people.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He built his company on lies.””
“Stop.””
“He ruined lives.””
“Stop.””
“He ruined Michael’s life.””
I looked back at the man in the hidden room.
Michael didn’t look surprised.
That scared me more.
“Is she telling the truth?””
Michael looked at the floor.
“Partly.””
My jaw tightened.
“Partly?””
He sighed.
“Your father did terrible things.””
I felt like I was standing in a stranger’s house.
My home.
My marriage.
My memories.
Everything had become unfamiliar.
“But Vanessa didn’t trap me because of your father.””
I looked at him.
“Then why?””
Michael lifted his eyes.
“Because I found proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Before he could answer, the front door slammed.
Everyone froze.
Lily screamed from the hallway.
“Daddy!””
I ran.
She was standing near the entrance.
The front door was open.
Cold air rushed inside.
And someone was standing outside.
A man in a dark coat.
Watching us.
He looked past me.
Straight at Michael.
May you like
Then he smiled.
“I see you finally found him.””
