Chapter 12: The Last Recording
Nobody spoke after the phone call.
My mother sat across from me.
Vanessa stood near the window.
Michael stayed beside the hidden passage.
Everyone looked guilty.
Everyone had secrets.
And somehow, I was still the only person who knew the least.
I placed my phone on the table.
“Start talking.””
My mother looked down.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“I spent my entire life believing a story that wasn’t true.””
I pointed around the room.
“Everyone here knew pieces of it.””
I looked at her.
“So tell me the whole thing.””
She nodded slowly.
“You deserve that.””
She took a breath.
“The recording exists.””
“Where?””
“Your father hid it.””
“Where?””
She looked toward Lily.
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“He hid it somewhere only a child would notice.””
I immediately thought about the bread.
The wall.
The bookcase.
“No.””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Your father loved hiding things in plain sight.””
I looked around the room.
Then I remembered.
The old wooden shelf.
The tiny marks.
The places Lily had touched.
I walked toward the hidden passage.
Behind the loose brick.
The hidden compartments.
Everything my daughter had found.
Everything adults had missed.
I searched the wall carefully.
Then Lily appeared beside me.
“Daddy?””
I smiled faintly.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
She pointed.
“There.””
A small crack near the floor.
I crouched.
Inside was another compartment.
My heart raced.
I opened it.
Inside was a small recorder.
Old.
Dusty.
But intact.
The last recording.
Everyone gathered around.
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then my father’s voice.
“Richard, this has gone too far.””
My entire body froze.
The recording continued.
“I gave you a chance to fix this.””
A second voice answered.
Richard.
“You should have taken the deal.””
My father sighed.
“You’re going to destroy everyone.””
Richard laughed.
“Everyone already belongs to me.””
A pause.
Then my father said something that made Vanessa cover her mouth.
“You involved my son’s wife.””
Silence.
Richard replied:
“She volunteered.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“She thinks she can walk away.””
Richard laughed.
“Nobody walks away.””
My father’s voice became angry.
“You threatened her.””
“I gave her an opportunity.””
The room went still.
Then my father said:
“You don’t understand what she is capable of.””
Richard laughed.
“Neither do you.””
The recording crackled.
Then came a sound.
A struggle.
My father shouting.
“No!””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“He killed him.””
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
She shook her head.
“I knew Richard was dangerous.””
“You knew he threatened my father.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you stay silent?””
She broke down.
“Because I was afraid.””
Michael looked away.
My mother reached for the recorder.
“There’s more.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She turned it over.
There was a small button on the side.
She pressed it.
Another recording started.
This one was quieter.
My father’s voice.
But alone.
“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, I need you to know something.””
I froze.
“It wasn’t Vanessa who betrayed me.””
Everyone looked shocked.
My father continued.
“She made mistakes. Terrible mistakes. But Richard used her.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“He knew exactly how to manipulate her.””
My father paused.
“But there was someone else.””
The room became silent.
Someone else.
My father continued.
“The person who gave Richard access…”
A long pause.
“The person who helped him cover everything…”
The recording crackled.
Then my father said the name.
The name nobody expected.
The name that made my mother step backward.
Because it wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t Michael.
It was someone standing in the room.
May you like
My father whispered:
“It was your mother.””
