Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew Too Much
The stranger stood in my doorway like he belonged there.
That was the first thing that scared me.
Not the fact that he knew Michael.
Not the fact that he had entered my house without permission.
It was the confidence.
The complete lack of fear.
Lily clung to my leg.
I moved in front of her.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at Vanessa.
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
He sighed.
“Vanessa, you really made a mess this time.””
My wife’s face tightened.
“Leave.””
He smiled.
“You know I can’t do that.””
Michael appeared behind me.
The moment he saw the man, his face changed.
“No.””
The stranger looked at him.
“Hello, Michael.””
Michael stepped back.
“You.””
I looked between them.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
The man walked inside.
I blocked his path.
“You’re not coming any farther.””
He looked at me.
“Daniel, right?””
The fact that he knew my name made my skin crawl.
“How do you know me?””
“I know a lot about you.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“Richard, stop.””
Richard.
The name hit something in my memory.
I had heard it before.
Not recently.
Years ago.
During one of my father’s business meetings.
A man named Richard Cole.
My father’s old partner.
“You knew him?”” I asked Vanessa.
She looked away.
Richard smiled.
“She never told you anything, did she?””
I turned to my wife.
“Apparently nobody tells me anything.””
Richard walked toward the living room.
I followed.
“You need to explain.””
He looked amused.
“You really think this is about your wife?””
I stared at him.
“Someone was living inside my wall.””
“Yes.””
“And my daughter was feeding him.””
“Yes.””
“And you’re acting like that’s normal.””
Richard sighed.
“Daniel, your daughter may have accidentally uncovered something people have spent years hiding.””
I looked at Michael.
“What did you find?””
Michael stared at Richard.
“The files.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
“Where are they?””
I noticed it.
A small change.
A crack in his confidence.
He wasn’t here because of Michael.
He was here because of something else.
“What files?”” I asked.
Nobody responded.
I stepped closer.
“What files?””
Michael looked at me.
“Your father kept records.””
“Of what?””
“Everyone.””
A chill ran through me.
“Everyone?””
Michael nodded.
“Partners. Employees. Deals. Payments.””
Richard interrupted.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Michael looked at him.
“You’re afraid.””
Richard laughed.
“No.””
“You should be.””
The tension in the room felt unbearable.
Then Lily spoke.
“My friend has paper.””
Everyone looked at her.
She was standing behind me.
“What did you say?””
She pointed toward the hidden room.
“He gave me paper.””
Vanessa’s face went white.
“Lily.””
I turned.
“What paper?””
Lily reached into her small backpack.
The same backpack she took everywhere.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I was keeping it safe.””
I took it.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
At first, it looked like random numbers.
Dates.
Names.
Amounts of money.
Then I saw one name.
My father’s.
And beneath it:
Vanessa Reed.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Nobody moved.
Richard slowly reached into his coat.
“Daniel, give me that.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
His expression changed.
The friendly mask disappeared.
“Give me the paper.””
Lily grabbed my hand.
I felt her shaking.
The man who had walked into my home without fear was suddenly afraid of a four-year-old girl’s backpack.
That told me everything.
I folded the paper and put it in my pocket.
Richard stared at me.
“You have no idea what you just started.””
I looked at him.
“I think I do.””
He stepped toward me.
Then Michael shouted:
“Daniel, don’t let him touch you!””
Richard stopped.
And for the first time, I saw the truth.
Richard wasn’t just hiding something.
He was terrified of what Michael knew.
Richard backed toward the door.
“This isn’t over.””
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You should have handled this years ago.””
After he left, the house became silent.
Too silent.
I turned to Vanessa.
“Tell me everything.””
She looked at the floor.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because if I tell you…”
May you like
She swallowed.
“Your father’s death wasn’t an accident.””
