Chapter 9: The Confession Hidden On Camera

I watched the video three times.

Each time, I hoped I had misunderstood.

Each time, the truth became worse.

Michael sat beside my dying wife.

Not years ago.

Not in some distant memory.

Three days before she passed away.

He was there.

Talking to her.

My hands shook.

“How long has he been lying to me?””

Daniel closed the laptop.

“That’s what we need to find out.””

I stood.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Richard.””

“I need to hear what he said.””

The video played again.

My wife looked exhausted.

But her voice was steady.

“Michael, please stop.””

My brother leaned closer.

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“I understand everything.””

My wife looked toward the camera.

“Richard will find out.””

Michael smiled.

A smile I had seen before.

A smile that now made my skin crawl.

“You always believed Richard deserved happiness.””

“He does.””

“And what about me?””

My wife shook her head.

“This isn’t about you.””

Michael laughed softly.

“It has always been about me.””

The video ended there.

I stared at the blank screen.

“He threatened her.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“But why?””

“Because she knew.””

“Knew what?””

Daniel opened the files again.

“Your father’s original estate plan.””

I looked at him.

“The one with Ethan?””

“Yes.””

Michael wasn’t trying to steal my life.

He was trying to rewrite it.

I drove to Michael’s house that afternoon.

I didn’t tell Daniel.

I didn’t tell anyone.

I needed to see him.

I needed him to admit it.

When he opened the door, he looked surprised.

“Richard.””

I walked inside.

“We need to talk about Mom.””

His expression changed.

“What about her?””

I placed the video file on the table.

His face went pale.

“You found that.””

Not a question.

A confession.

“You were there.””

Michael looked away.

“She was sick.””

“You threatened her.””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

He poured himself a drink.

“You always think everything is simple.””

“You hurt my wife.””

“I tried to fix a mistake.””

I stared.

“What mistake?””

“You.””

I felt my anger rise.

“You think I’m the mistake?””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You had everything handed to you.””

I stepped closer.

“You tried to destroy my daughter.””

His face changed.

“She was never supposed to be involved.””

“Then why was she?””

He didn’t answer.

And that silence told me enough.

“You knew about the inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Ethan.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Nia was the only thing stopping you.””

Michael looked at me.

“She was the only thing stopping everyone from getting what they deserved.””

I couldn’t believe him.

“Everyone?””

He smiled.

“You really think Vanessa was working alone?””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Michael walked to his desk.

Then he pulled out a folder.

“You should ask your wife why she married you.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Ask Vanessa why she entered your life.””

My heart sank.

Because suddenly I realized something.

Vanessa’s arrival had been too perfect.

She met me after my wife died.

She comforted me.

She became close to Nia.

Then everything changed.

I grabbed the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Vanessa.

Michael.

And Thomas Reed.

Together.

Years earlier.

Planning something.

My phone rang.

It was Carla from child services.

I answered immediately.

“Mr. Bennett, I found something concerning.””

“What?””

“There’s a second report about Nia.””

My heart tightened.

“What report?””

A pause.

“One claiming your daughter’s biological mother was unsafe.””

I froze.

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Carla’s voice lowered.

“Richard, the report was filed the day before she died.””

I looked at the photograph in my hand.

Vanessa.

Michael.

Thomas.

Three people connected by the same secret.

Then Carla said the words that changed everything.

“Your wife wasn’t just investigating them.””

“She was trying to expose them.””

I stared at the folder.

“And they stopped her.””

Silence.

Then Carla whispered:

“Richard… we found the original death investigation file.””

My breathing stopped.

“What’s inside?””

May you like

Her answer was quiet.

“Your wife’s death was never ruled an accident.””
