Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed

“Your daughter was there.””

Vanessa’s words froze the entire room.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the ticking clock on the wall.

Not the rain hitting the windows.

Not even my own breathing.

Only those five words.

Your daughter was there.

I stared at Vanessa.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked away.

“Richard…”

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“You don’t get to say something like that and walk away.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me?””

I held up the letter.

“You tried to remove my daughter from my home. You tried to take her inheritance. You let someone accuse me of hurting her.””

My voice shook.

“And now you’re telling me you’re protecting me?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Not with Nia here.””

I turned.

My daughter was standing halfway down the stairs.

She looked terrified.

I immediately walked toward her.

“Sweetheart, go to your room.””

“But Daddy—”

“Please.””

She nodded slowly.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because my daughter had learned to obey fear.

After she disappeared upstairs, I returned to Vanessa.

“Talk.””

She sat down.

For the first time since I met her, she looked smaller.

“I met your wife before she died.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

She looked at the photograph on the table.

“Your wife knew about Ethan.””

I stayed silent.

“She found out I had a son with you years earlier.””

My jaw tightened.

“And she helped you?””

Vanessa looked down.

“No.””

That answer surprised me.

“She hated me.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought I abandoned Ethan.””

I stared.

“What happened?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“After you and I broke up, I found out I was pregnant.””

My heart pounded.

“I tried to contact you.””

“You never did.””

“I did.””

She looked at me.

“I called. I emailed. I went to your apartment.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not true.””

“She was already there.””

I froze.

“Who?””

“Your first wife.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa continued.

“She answered your door.””

My mind raced back.

The early years.

The apartment.

The months before my marriage.

“I told her I was pregnant.””

“And?””

“She asked me not to destroy your life.””

I felt sick.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“She promised she would tell you when the time was right.””

“Why didn’t she?””

“Because Ethan disappeared.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Someone took him.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean someone took him?””

“I was young. I was scared. I made mistakes. But I never abandoned my son.””

Her voice cracked.

“Someone convinced the court I was unstable.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

“Your brother.””

Michael.

The name felt like poison.

I stepped back.

“Michael was involved?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he hated you.””

I thought about the warehouse.

His words.

His anger.

Everything connected.

“He used Ethan against me.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He knew if Ethan existed, it could complicate everything.””

“What everything?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your father’s inheritance.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Of course.

Money.

Everything came back to money.

“But why attack Nia?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Nia was the only person standing between Michael and everything he wanted.””

I looked at the stairs.

My daughter.

The target.

Always my daughter.

Then Vanessa said something I didn’t expect.

“I never wanted to hurt Nia.””

I stared at her.

“Your actions say otherwise.””

“I wanted her gone because Michael convinced me she was the reason I would never get Ethan back.””

I stepped away.

“You believed him.””

“I was desperate.””

“That doesn’t excuse what you did.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Laura.

I opened it.

A photograph.

Another document.

The caption said:

I found the original custody file.

My hands shook as I opened the attachment.

The document showed Ethan’s custody transfer.

And at the bottom was the signature of the person who approved it.

Michael Bennett.

But beneath his signature was another name.

A name I recognized.

A name that made my blood run cold.

Because it belonged to the person who had raised me after my parents died.

May you like

My father’s closest friend.

The man I trusted like family.
