Chapter 4: The Child Hidden From Me

The photograph shook in Vanessa’s hand.

A little boy.

Maybe eight years old.

Dark hair. Brown eyes.

A familiar expression that made my chest tighten.

For one terrifying second, I wondered if I was looking at another version of my own daughter.

“What is this?”” I asked.

Vanessa’s confidence grew.

“His name is Ethan.””

The man beside her watched me carefully.

“He’s your son, Richard.””

The words didn’t make sense.

My mind rejected them before my heart could even process them.

“No.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“You really think you know everything about your first wife?””

I stepped closer.

“Don’t bring Nia’s mother into this.””

“I’m not the one who kept secrets.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Where is this coming from?””

The man handed me a folder.

“My name is Steven Parker. I represent Ms. Collins.””

I looked at the folder but didn’t take it.

“Collins?””

Vanessa looked away.

Then I understood.

Her maiden name.

“Why are you using another name?””

She ignored the question.

“Open it.””

I took the folder.

Inside were documents.

Birth records.

A custody request.

Photographs.

And a DNA test.

My eyes moved across the page.

The name.

Ethan Collins.

Mother: Vanessa Collins.

Father: Richard Bennett.

I felt the world tilt.

“No.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You were with me before you met Nia’s mother.””

I looked up sharply.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Memories flashed through my mind.

The years before my marriage.

The relationship I had ended because Vanessa wanted different things.

The phone calls I ignored.

The messages I never answered.

But a child?

No.

I would have known.

“You’re lying.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You always believed you were the victim.””

I looked toward the house.

Nia was watching through the window.

I lowered my voice.

“Why are you showing me this now?””

For the first time, Vanessa hesitated.

And I saw it.

This wasn’t about telling me the truth.

It was about using the truth.

Steven answered.

“Because your daughter’s inheritance creates a complicated family situation.””

My stomach dropped.

“There it is.””

Vanessa looked annoyed.

“What?””

“The money.””

She stepped forward.

“Richard, don’t pretend this is only about money.””

“Isn’t it?””

“You never understood what happened after you left.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You mean after YOU disappeared?””

Her expression changed.

“You don’t know what I went through.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

Then she said quietly:

“Ethan deserves what’s his.””

I stared at her.

“What does that have to do with Nia?””

She looked directly at me.

“Everything.””

That night, I barely slept.

I sat at my desk surrounded by documents.

Every page created more questions.

Could Vanessa really have a son with me?

Could my first wife have known?

Could Nia have a brother?

At 2:13 a.m., I heard footsteps.

I looked up.

Nia stood in the doorway holding her stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit she had slept with since she was six.

“Daddy?””

I immediately closed the files.

“Hey, sweetheart. Why are you awake?””

She walked closer.

“Are you mad at me?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

“Because Vanessa said families fall apart when children cause problems.””

I stood and walked toward her.

“Nia, listen to me.””

I knelt.

“You are not a problem.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But Ethan is your son too.””

I froze.

She had seen the picture.

“How did you know his name?””

“Vanessa showed me.””

I took a breath.

“What did she say?””

Nia looked down.

“She said you might choose him.””

Those words destroyed me.

I pulled her into my arms.

“Nothing could make me stop choosing you.””

The next morning, Daniel came to my house.

I showed him the documents.

He read everything silently.

Then he looked up.

“Richard.””

“What?””

“There’s something wrong.””

“What do you mean?””

Daniel tapped the DNA report.

“This test was done six months ago.””

I frowned.

“Six months?””

“Yes.””

“But Vanessa and I weren’t in contact six months ago.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Exactly.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

Someone had arranged this before Vanessa ever entered my house.

Someone had planned this.

Then Daniel noticed another page.

His face changed.

“What?””

He turned the document around.

“This signature.””

I looked at the bottom.

A name.

The person who requested the DNA test.

My breath stopped.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa.

May you like

It wasn’t Steven.

It was someone inside my own family.
