Chapter 8: The Family That Was Never Real

I spent the entire night reading documents.

Every page destroyed another piece of the life I thought I knew.

The man who raised me.

Thomas Reed.

My father’s best friend.

The person who had comforted me when my parents died.

The person who told me I was like a son to him.

His signature was everywhere.

Custody paperwork.

Financial agreements.

Legal documents.

He had been there from the beginning.

Not as a protector.

As a planner.

At sunrise, Daniel arrived.

I placed the documents on the table.

He read silently.

Then he looked up.

“Richard.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice was serious.

“This changes everything.””

I frowned.

“How?””

“Thomas Reed was involved in your father’s estate.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel pulled out his laptop.

“Your father created a trust.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You know the trust existed. You don’t know all the conditions.””

I leaned forward.

“What conditions?””

Daniel opened a file.

“When your father died, the inheritance was supposed to be divided between his children.””

I frowned.

“My father only had me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s what you were told.””

The room went quiet.

I felt like my entire life was built on lies.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“There was another beneficiary.””

My chest tightened.

“Ethan.””

He nodded.

“My father knew?””

“According to these records, yes.””

I stood.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Richard.””

“My father would have told me.””

“Would he?””

The question hurt.

Because I didn’t know anymore.

Every person I trusted had been hiding something.

I walked into the kitchen.

Nia was sitting there quietly.

She had heard everything.

“Daddy?””

I immediately went to her.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked confused.

“For what?””

“For letting people hurt you.””

Her eyes filled.

“You didn’t.””

I sat beside her.

“I should have seen it.””

She shook her head.

“Mom always said you loved too much.””

I froze.

“What?””

Nia touched the necklace she wore.

“Grandma gave me this before she died.””

I looked at it.

“Nia, where did you get that?””

“She left it for me.””

My heart stopped.

“Who told you that?””

“My mom.””

I stared.

“What else did she tell you?””

Nia looked nervous.

“She said if anything ever happened, I should give it to you.””

I carefully removed the necklace.

Inside the pendant was a tiny folded piece of paper.

My hands trembled.

A hidden message.

I opened it.

Richard,

If you found this, the truth has finally reached you.

Trust no one who says they are protecting you.

Someone close to you caused this.

The person who destroyed our family is still watching.

I stopped reading.

Because there was one final sentence.

The person who helped Michael was someone you call family.

I looked at Nia.

“Sweetheart, did anyone else know about this necklace?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A floorboard creaked.

Someone was inside.

I stood immediately.

“Stay here.””

I moved slowly.

The front door was locked.

The windows were closed.

Then I saw it.

A shadow moving outside the kitchen window.

I opened the door.

Nothing.

Only the empty yard.

But something was sitting on the porch.

A small package.

No name.

No address.

Inside was a flash drive.

Daniel plugged it into his laptop.

A video appeared.

The timestamp was from three days before my wife died.

The person on the screen was my wife.

Alive.

Sitting in a hospital room.

My heart broke seeing her face.

Then she spoke.

“Richard, if you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””

I grabbed the chair.

Her voice continued.

“I found out who was trying to destroy us.””

The video shook slightly.

She looked toward the door.

Like she was afraid someone would enter.

Then she whispered:

“And the person helping them is someone you would never suspect.””

The video paused.

Daniel looked at the file information.

“There’s another part.””

He clicked.

A second video opened.

This time, the camera showed my wife speaking to someone.

Someone sitting beside her bed.

Someone whose face was hidden.

Then the person turned.

And I stopped breathing.

Because I knew that face.

May you like

It was my own brother.

Michael.
