Chapter 11: The Woman Who Entered My Home
I found Vanessa at a hotel outside Atlanta.
I didn’t call.
I didn’t warn her.
I walked into the lobby holding the letter my first wife left behind.
She was sitting near the window.
When she saw me, she immediately knew.
“You found it.””
I sat across from her.
“Tell me everything.””
Vanessa looked exhausted.
For once, there was no anger.
No confidence.
No performance.
“I never wanted it to go this far.””
I placed the letter on the table.
“My wife said you were involved before she died.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She was right.””
The admission hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“How?””
She looked down.
“Michael contacted me.””
“When?””
“Before I met you.””
I felt sick.
“You knew exactly who I was.””
“Yes.””
“You approached me.””
“Yes.””
Every answer felt like another betrayal.
“Why?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Because Michael promised he could help me get Ethan back.””
I stared at her.
“So you used me.””
“At first.””
The honesty was worse.
“At first?””
She nodded.
“Then things changed.””
I laughed bitterly.
“When?””
“When I met Nia.””
My expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
“I’m telling the truth.””
“No. You’re trying to make yourself feel better.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I hated that she reminded me of what I lost.””
I said nothing.
“She was a child who had everything I wanted.””
My voice became quiet.
“You were jealous of a twelve-year-old?””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked me.
“But then I realized something.””
“What?””
“She wasn’t my enemy.””
I looked at her.
“Yet you hurt her.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.””
The silence between us was heavy.
“Where is Ethan?””
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“I don’t know.””
“What?””
“Michael knows.””
I leaned forward.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Michael?””
She nodded.
“He threatened Ethan.””
My anger rose.
“He threatened your own son?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small recorder.
“I saved everything.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because I knew one day I would need proof.””
She pressed play.
Michael’s voice filled the room.
“Once Richard loses Nia, the inheritance issue disappears.””
I froze.
Another voice.
Thomas.
“And Ethan?””
Michael answered.
“He’ll get what he deserves.””
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“I don’t want to hurt the girl.””
Michael laughed.
“You already agreed.””
The recording ended.
I sat there in silence.
The proof was real.
Vanessa had been involved.
But so had everyone else.
“Why give this to me now?””
She looked at me.
“Because Michael is going after Nia again.””
My body tensed.
“What do you mean?””
“He has another plan.””
“What plan?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“He wants to make sure Nia never testifies.””
My blood ran cold.
“She’s twelve.””
“I know.””
“Who would do that?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Someone who thinks he has nothing left to lose.””
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Richard.””
His voice was urgent.
“You need to come home.””
“What happened?””
“There was a break-in.””
My heart stopped.
“Is Nia okay?””
A pause.
That pause terrified me.
“Richard…”
I stood.
May you like
“What?””
“She’s gone.””
