Chapter 10: The Death That Wasn't An Accident

I sat in my car long after Carla ended the call.

The world outside kept moving.

People walked past.

Cars drove down the street.

The sun continued shining.

But my entire reality had changed.

My wife’s death.

The one thing I had spent years accepting.

The one painful memory I thought I had already survived.

It was now a question.

Not an answer.

I drove straight to the county office.

Carla was waiting with a thick folder.

“Richard,” she said quietly.

I took the folder.

“Tell me.””

She hesitated.

“The original investigation was incomplete.””

“Incomplete?””

“There were inconsistencies.””

I opened the file.

Photos.

Reports.

Statements.

My hands stopped when I saw the first photograph.

My wife’s car.

The same car I remembered sitting beside in the hospital parking lot.

The same car I thought had simply lost control on a rainy road.

But now I noticed something.

The damage.

The angle.

The location.

“This wasn’t an accident.””

Carla looked at me.

“The evidence suggests someone may have interfered with the vehicle.””

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had blamed myself.

I had replayed that night.

Thinking about the last conversation we had.

Thinking about how I should have called her.

How I should have stayed home.

How I should have noticed something was wrong.

And all this time…

Someone else caused it.

“Who knew?””

Carla looked uncomfortable.

“The original report was reviewed by several people.””

“Names.””

She handed me another page.

I scanned it.

Then I saw it.

Thomas Reed.

The man who raised me.

The man who hugged me at my wife’s funeral.

The man who told me everything would be okay.

He had signed the final approval.

My stomach turned.

I left the office with one thought.

Find Thomas.

When I arrived at his house, he looked surprised.

“Richard?””

I didn’t answer.

I walked inside.

He frowned.

“What’s wrong?””

I placed the file on the table.

“You tell me.””

He looked down.

The color disappeared from his face.

“I see you found it.””

Those words hurt.

Because they meant he had been waiting.

“How long?””

Thomas sighed.

“Richard…”

“How long did you know?””

He sat down.

“Longer than you should know.””

My chest tightened.

“You were my father’s best friend.””

“Yes.””

“You raised me.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

His eyes became wet.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

My voice was cold.

“You made choices.””

Silence.

Finally, Thomas spoke.

“Your father trusted me with everything.””

“My father trusted you because he thought you were family.””

“And I was.””

“Family doesn’t destroy children.””

He looked away.

“I never wanted Nia hurt.””

“But she was.””

“I wanted the inheritance protected.””

I stared.

“You wanted money.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I wanted control.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Because your father chose you.””

There it was.

The same jealousy.

The same poison.

Everyone around me had been fighting over what I had.

But none of them understood.

I would have traded everything to have my wife back.

I would have given away every dollar to protect my daughter.

Thomas continued.

“When your wife discovered Ethan existed, she threatened everything.””

“She threatened you.””

“Yes.””

“So you helped Michael.””

Thomas didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My phone rang.

Nia.

I answered immediately.

“Sweetheart?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Daddy…”

I stood.

“What happened?””

“I found something.””

My heart raced.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Stay there.””

I turned toward Thomas.

“You’re not done telling me the truth.””

Then I left.

When I arrived home, Nia was holding an old envelope.

She looked terrified.

“I found it behind the wall.””

I took it.

The envelope had my wife’s handwriting.

Another letter.

But this one had my name.

Richard.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

If you are reading this, they know I found out.

They know I discovered the truth about Ethan.

But there is something more important.

Protect Nia from Vanessa.

Because Vanessa is not the person you think she is.

I stopped.

A chill moved through me.

Then I read the final line.

The woman you married was involved before my death.

I looked at Nia.

Then back at the letter.

Because suddenly I understood.

May you like

Vanessa wasn’t just a person who joined the plan.

She was part of it from the beginning.
