Chapter 3: The Person Behind the Plan

I stared at the picture for almost a full minute.

The man sitting across from Vanessa was Daniel Hayes.

The same attorney who had promised to help me protect my daughter.

The same man who had warned me about Vanessa.

My first thought was betrayal.

My second thought was confusion.

Because if Daniel was working with Vanessa, why had he helped me?

Unless helping me was part of the plan.

The next morning, I drove to his office.

I didn’t call ahead.

I wanted to see his reaction.

When Daniel opened the door, his smile disappeared the second he saw my face.

“Richard.””

I held up my phone.

“Want to explain this?””

His eyes dropped to the photograph.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he closed the door.

“Come inside.””

I walked into his office.

“You told me Vanessa was dangerous.””

“She is.””

“Then why were you meeting with her?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Because I was trying to find out what she was planning.””

I stared at him.

“That’s convenient.””

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

“Because my daughter was almost taken away from me.””

His expression softened.

“I know.””

The anger in me grew.

“No, you don’t.””

I pointed toward the window.

“You didn’t see her afraid to walk toward me.””

Daniel looked down.

Then he opened a drawer.

Inside was a file.

“This is why I met her.””

He handed it to me.

The first page was a copy of a message exchange.

Vanessa had been talking to another person.

A person named Marcus.

I frowned.

“Who is Marcus?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s what I was trying to find out.””

I flipped through the pages.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A payment record.

Vanessa had transferred money to Marcus several times.

And the dates matched the days Nia’s bruises appeared.

“She paid someone?””

Daniel nodded.

“Someone who helped her build the story against you.””

I looked up.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I needed proof.””

I hated that answer.

But I knew one thing.

I needed the truth.

That night, Nia and I sat in the kitchen eating pizza.

For the first time in weeks, she smiled.

Then she looked at me.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you still going to take family pictures?””

I smiled sadly.

“Only if you’re in every single one.””

She smiled.

“Even the bad ones?””

“Especially the bad ones.””

She laughed softly.

And for a moment, everything felt normal.

Then someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

My body immediately tensed.

I stood.

“Stay behind me.””

I opened the door.

Vanessa stood there.

But she wasn’t alone.

A man in a suit stood beside her.

“Richard,” she said quietly.

“I need to talk to you.””

I stepped outside.

“You need to leave.””

The man beside her held up a document.

“Mr. Bennett, I’m representing Vanessa.””

I looked at the papers.

“What is this?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Confidence.

The man spoke.

“Your wife is requesting emergency access to your daughter’s inheritance account.””

My hands tightened.

“You’re still doing this?””

Vanessa looked past me toward the house.

Toward Nia.

Then she said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Richard, you still don’t understand.””

She smiled faintly.

“Nia was never the only child involved.””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa reached into her purse.

And pulled out a photograph.

A photograph of a little boy.

A boy I had never seen before.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“Your daughter has a brother you never knew existed.””
