Chapter 12: The Daughter I Refused To Lose

I don’t remember driving home.

I only remember the sound of my own heartbeat.

The front door was open.

The lights were on.

The house looked normal.

And that was the worst part.

Because something terrible had happened in a place that still looked peaceful.

“Nia!””

My voice echoed through every room.

No answer.

I ran upstairs.

Her bedroom door was open.

Her bed was untouched.

Her stuffed rabbit was gone.

The one she carried everywhere.

Daniel stood in the hallway.

“I’m sorry.””

I turned.

“Where is she?””

He looked devastated.

“We found this.””

He handed me a note.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Richard,

Stop searching.

You already lost once.

Don’t make this worse.

No signature.

But I knew.

Michael.

I wanted to destroy everything around me.

But then I remembered Nia.

She needed me calm.

She needed her father.

Not my anger.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

A voice replied.

“You’re finally listening.””

Michael.

“Where is she?””

“Safe.””

“If you hurt her—”

“I’m not the monster you think I am.””

I almost screamed.

“You kidnapped a child.””

“I protected my family.””

“She is your family?””

“No.””

His voice became cold.

“She is the reason everyone else lost theirs.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you want?””

“The original trust documents.””

“You have them.””

“No.””

He laughed softly.

“You have the one thing everyone forgot about.””

“What?””

“Your father’s private letter.””

I froze.

My father’s letter.

The one thing Thomas had never found.

“How do you know about that?””

“Because your father told me.””

My blood ran cold.

“You knew my father?””

“I knew everyone.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I looked toward Nia’s empty room.

“He wants my father’s letter.””

Daniel became pale.

“Richard…”

“What?””

“Your father’s letter could change everything.””

“How?””

“It proves who was supposed to inherit the estate.””

I understood.

This was never just about Nia’s money.

It was about control.

I called Carla.

“I need help.””

She immediately understood.

“We’re tracking the phone.””

Minutes passed like hours.

Then a location appeared.

An abandoned warehouse.

The same type of place my father used years ago.

I grabbed my keys.

Daniel stopped me.

“You can’t go alone.””

“I’m her father.””

“And that’s exactly why you’ll make mistakes.””

I looked at him.

He was right.

For the first time in days, I listened.

We arrived with police nearby.

The warehouse was dark.

Silent.

Too silent.

I walked inside.

“Nia!””

A small voice answered.

“Daddy?””

My entire body moved before my mind could think.

I found her tied to a chair.

Alive.

Terrified.

But alive.

I ran to her.

“I’m here.””

She started crying.

“I knew you would come.””

I held her.

“I will always come.””

Behind us, footsteps echoed.

Michael stepped from the shadows.

He looked tired.

Broken.

But still dangerous.

“You really don’t understand, Richard.””

I stood in front of Nia.

“You’re done.””

Michael smiled.

“No.””

He looked at my daughter.

“She’s the last piece.””

Police moved closer.

Michael noticed.

Then he said something that made everyone freeze.

“You want the truth?””

I stared.

“What truth?””

He smiled.

“Ask your daughter what happened the night your wife died.””

My heart stopped.

I turned toward Nia.

Her face went pale.

Because she remembered.

And she whispered:

May you like

“Daddy…”

“I saw someone push Mom’s car.””
