Chapter 6: The Letter My Wife Left Behind

I couldn’t speak.

The woman’s words echoed through my head.

Your first wife knew about him before she died.

For years, I believed I knew everything about the woman I loved.

I believed our marriage had no hidden corners.

I believed the hardest thing we survived was losing her.

But now another secret was rising from the past.

“Laura,” I said slowly.

“Tell me exactly what you mean.””

The woman sighed.

“I was your wife’s assistant at the hospital.””

My chest tightened.

“My wife never told me about Ethan.””

“She wanted to.””

The words hit me.

“Why didn’t she?””

A long pause.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Laura lowered her voice.

“Vanessa.””

I looked toward Nia.

She was still drawing at the table.

“Explain.””

“Your wife discovered that Vanessa was contacting Ethan’s records.””

I stood.

“Before she died?””

“Yes.””

My heart raced.

“What else?””

“She prepared something for you.””

“What?””

“A letter.””

I stopped breathing.

“A letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Laura hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

“What problem?””

“It disappeared after your wife passed away.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another missing piece.

Another secret.

“Who had access to her things?””

“Family members.””

I immediately thought of Michael.

But Laura continued.

“And Vanessa.””

The room felt colder.

That night, I searched every box from my first wife’s belongings.

Old photographs.

Medical records.

Birthday cards.

Everything.

Nia sat beside me.

“Are we looking for Mom?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She smiled sadly.

“I miss her.””

I touched her hair.

“Me too.””

After hours of searching, I found something.

A small wooden box hidden beneath old blankets.

Inside was a necklace.

A few photographs.

And an envelope.

My hands shook when I saw the handwriting.

My wife’s handwriting.

Richard.

I opened it carefully.

My eyes moved across the page.

If you are reading this, something happened before I could tell you myself.

My heart pounded.

I continued.

There is something you need to know about Vanessa.

I stopped.

Nia noticed.

“What does it say?””

I pulled her close.

“Something important.””

The letter continued.

She was not honest with you about her past. She believed Ethan was connected to her future, and she was willing to hurt people to get what she wanted.

I swallowed.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

But the most important thing is this:

Protect Nia.

She has always been the target.

Not because of who she is.

Because of what she owns.

I closed my eyes.

My wife knew.

She knew someone was coming for our daughter.

Then something slipped out from behind the letter.

A small photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed my first wife.

Vanessa.

And Michael.

Standing together.

My blood froze.

They knew each other.

Before my wife died.

Before Vanessa entered my life.

Before any of this happened.

I heard the front door open.

I immediately stood.

“Nia, go upstairs.””

“Daddy?””

“Now.””

Footsteps moved through the hallway.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She looked at the letter in my hand.

And all the color disappeared from her face.

“Where did you find that?””

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

She said nothing.

“You knew my wife knew.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You weren’t supposed to find it.””

Those words confirmed everything.

I stepped closer.

“What did you do to my wife?””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.

“I didn’t kill her.””

I froze.

Because I never asked that question.

Vanessa realized her mistake immediately.

And I watched her face change.

A terrible silence filled the room.

Then she whispered:

“Richard… there’s something about the night your wife died that you were never told.””

I held the letter tighter.

“What?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

Toward Nia.

May you like

Then she said:

“Your daughter was there.””
