Chapter 9: The Soldier Behind the Mask

Nobody breathed.

The highlighted name remained on the screen.

Thomas Reed.

Ava looked at him.

“You?””

Thomas stepped back.

“No.””

The pain in his voice sounded real.

But after everything we had discovered, trust had become dangerous.

I looked at the screen.

Daniel’s message was incomplete.

The file had been damaged.

Only one thing was clear.

Thomas’s name was there.

Hale moved closer.

“Turn it off.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t understand what you’re seeing.””

Thomas stared at the screen.

“I never betrayed Daniel.””

Ava’s eyes filled with anger.

“My father trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why is your name there?””

Thomas had no answer.

That silence hurt more than any explanation.

Ranger suddenly barked.

Everyone turned.

The dog ran toward an old cabinet.

He scratched at the bottom drawer.

I opened it.

Inside was another recording.

Smaller.

Older.

This one had Daniel’s handwriting.

THOMAS — PLAY ONLY IF NECESSARY.

Thomas stared.

“He made that for me.””

I handed him the recorder.

He pressed play.

Daniel’s voice appeared.

“Thomas, if you’re hearing this, they found the list.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“Your name is there because I put it there.””

Everyone froze.

Ava looked confused.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“I needed them to believe Thomas was involved.””

Thomas opened his eyes.

“What did you do, Daniel?””

Daniel answered.

“I created a false trail.””

The tension disappeared from Thomas’s face.

He almost collapsed.

“He protected me.””

I looked at the screen.

Daniel continued.

“The people hunting the truth will follow the names they recognize.””

A pause.

Then:

“They will never look at the person nobody suspects.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ava whispered:

“Who?””

Who was Daniel protecting?

Who was the person nobody suspected?

The archive door opened.

Slowly.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Wearing a military coat.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

Hale immediately stepped back.

“No…”

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

Hale’s voice was barely audible.

“Yes.””

The man walked into the room.

“I was wondering how long it would take Ranger to bring you here.””

My hand tightened.

“Who are you?””

He looked at Ava.

Then at the photograph of Daniel.

Then finally at me.

“My name is Victor Lang.””

The same man who approved the mission.

The same man connected to the hidden operation.

He smiled slightly.

“You’ve spent seven years looking for the person who betrayed your team.””

He looked at Ranger.

“But you never asked the most important question.””

I stared at him.

“What question?””

Victor stepped closer.

“Why did Daniel Mercer trust a dog more than every human around him?””

Ranger growled.

Victor stopped.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

Because Ranger recognized him.

Victor looked at the dog.

And whispered:

“He remembers the night Daniel died.””

The room went silent.

May you like

Then Victor said:

“And he remembers who was there.””
