Chapter 4: The Man Who Vanished

Thomas Reed stood in the doorway like a ghost that had finally decided to return.

For years, everyone believed he had disappeared after Daniel Mercer’s final mission. Some reports said he transferred overseas. Others suggested he left the military entirely.

Nobody mentioned that he was alive.

Nobody mentioned that he had been carrying the original mission file.

Ranger stared at him.

Not with anger.

With recognition.

Thomas looked at the dog and slowly lowered the folder in his hand.

“He remembers me.””

My hand moved instinctively toward the hidden data strip in my pocket.

“You were there.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Yes.””

Ava stepped forward.

“You knew my father.””

His expression softened.

“I knew him better than anyone.””

“Then why did everyone say you disappeared?””

Thomas looked toward Colonel Hale.

The silence between them felt heavier than any argument.

“Because someone needed a person to blame.””

Hale’s face tightened.

“Careful, Reed.””

Thomas laughed quietly.

“Still protecting the same people, Marcus?””

I watched them closely.

Two men who shared the same battlefield.

Two men who clearly knew more than they wanted to admit.

Ava pointed at the folder.

“What is inside?””

Thomas looked down.

“The truth.””

He placed it on Hale’s desk.

“Your father found evidence that the mission was compromised before the team entered the location.””

Ava froze.

“He knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“He warned everyone.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Daniel had suspected betrayal.

And we ignored him.

“What kind of evidence?”” I asked.

Thomas opened the folder.

Inside were photographs, mission maps, and handwritten notes.

But the most important page was a list of names.

Several names were crossed out.

One remained.

Colonel Marcus Hale.

Ava looked at him.

“You were investigating him?””

Hale looked away.

“No.””

Thomas answered.

“I was.””

The room became silent.

Hale’s voice turned cold.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what I’m talking about,” Thomas replied.

“Daniel discovered someone was moving classified information before the operation. He thought it was an outside threat.””

Thomas looked at Ranger.

“He was wrong.””

My stomach tightened.

“You’re saying it was someone inside the unit?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Ava looked at Ranger.

“And he knew?””

Thomas walked closer.

“Your father trained Ranger differently after he discovered the leaks.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“He created a backup system.””

“A dog as a backup system?””

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Not just a dog.””

He touched Ranger’s collar.

“A witness.””

The word stayed in my mind.

A witness.

Not a weapon.

Not a tool.

A witness.

Suddenly, Ranger moved toward the folder.

He pushed aside several papers until he reached a photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed Daniel, Thomas, and another soldier standing together.

The third man’s face had been scratched out.

Ava noticed.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

That was when I knew the missing face mattered.

Thomas slowly said:

“His name was Aaron Blake.””

Hale’s expression changed.

“You shouldn’t have brought him into this.””

Thomas looked at him.

“He’s already in it.””

Ava looked between them.

“Who was Aaron?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then he said:

“The man who knew the truth before all of us.””

Before I could ask another question, the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the office went dark.

Ranger immediately moved in front of Ava.

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Footsteps.

Not one person.

Several.

Hale whispered:

“They found us.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

May you like

His answer came quietly.

“The people who made sure Daniel Mercer never came home.””
