Chapter 5: The Hidden Mission

The emergency lights turned the hallway red.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then Hale grabbed the mission folder.

“Everyone out.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

Hale looked at him.

“You want to die here?””

Thomas held his ground.

“I spent seven years running. I’m done running.””

Ava looked confused.

“Seven years?””

Thomas looked at her.

“After your father died, I tried to expose what happened.””

“And?””

“And someone made sure nobody listened.””

The footsteps outside grew louder.

I looked at Ranger.

The dog was focused on the hallway.

Waiting.

Ready.

The same way he had waited before every mission.

But this time, he wasn’t waiting for a command.

He was waiting for the truth.

We moved through a side exit and entered the old training area behind the building.

The rain had stopped.

The entire base was quiet.

Too quiet.

Thomas followed beside me.

“You still trust Hale?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t trust anyone yet.””

He nodded.

“Good answer.””

Ava held the folder tightly.

“My father died because people lied.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Your father died because he refused to become one of them.””

She stopped walking.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked away.

“Daniel was offered a chance to stay silent.””

“And he refused?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Because he believed soldiers protect the truth, not the people hiding it.””

Those words sounded exactly like Daniel.

I remembered the night before the mission.

Daniel sitting beside Ranger.

Quiet.

Serious.

I had asked him what was wrong.

He only said:

“Elias, the hardest enemy to find is the one wearing the same uniform.””

At the time, I thought he meant the enemy overseas.

Now I knew.

He meant someone closer.

We reached the abandoned training warehouse.

Thomas opened an old locker.

Inside was a small metal case.

Ava stared.

“What is that?””

“The second half of the evidence.””

I looked at him.

“You had this all along?””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Ranger.

“Daniel hid it.””

Inside the case was another data drive.

But before we could examine it, my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A picture appeared.

It was Ranger.

Taken moments earlier.

Outside the command building.

My blood went cold.

Someone had been watching us.

The message underneath was short.

STOP DIGGING.

OR THE DOG WON’T BE THE ONLY ONE WHO DISAPPEARS.

Ava saw the screen.

“They’re threatening him.””

I looked at Ranger.

The dog stared back calmly.

Almost like he understood.

Thomas whispered:

“They’re afraid.””

“Of what?””

Thomas looked at the data drive.

“Of what Daniel left behind.””

We connected the drive to an old military computer.

The first file opened.

MISSION FINAL REPORT.

But this was different.

No edits.

No missing pages.

The original.

I scrolled through the timeline.

Then I saw it.

A recording.

Created twenty minutes before the mission ended.

Daniel’s name appeared.

My hands froze.

Ava moved closer.

“Play it.””

I pressed the button.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then Daniel’s voice filled the room.

“If you’re hearing this, something went wrong.””

Ava covered her mouth.

My heart stopped.

Daniel continued.

“Ranger has the evidence. Trust him.””

I looked at the dog.

Then the recording continued.

“The betrayal came from someone I trusted.””

A pause.

Then Daniel said one final sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

“Elias, if Ranger brought this back to you…”

The recording cut.

I stared at the screen.

“Play it again.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

Because the next part wasn’t audio.

It was a video file.

And when we opened it, we saw Daniel standing in the mission area.

Alive.

Speaking to someone off-camera.

Someone whose face we couldn’t see.

May you like

But whose voice we recognized.

Colonel Marcus Hale.
