Chapter 14: The Truth Daniel Left Behind

The video continued.

The quality was poor, but the voices were clear.

Daniel stood in the bunker.

Alive.

Standing beside another soldier.

Aaron Blake.

But not the Aaron Blake standing beside us now.

This was seven years earlier.

Younger.

Stronger.

Alive.

Ava looked at Blake.

“You survived.””

Blake nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone think you died?””

Blake looked at the screen.

“Because that was the only way I could disappear.””

Daniel’s recorded voice interrupted.

“Aaron and I discovered the operation was compromised before the mission started.””

The video showed Daniel placing files on the table.

“We found evidence that someone was changing intelligence reports.””

Blake continued:

“We thought the leak was outside.””

Daniel shook his head.

“We were wrong.””

Ava whispered:

“Inside.””

Daniel nodded.

“We realized someone with authority was manipulating every step.””

The video changed.

A list appeared.

Names.

Orders.

Approvals.

And at the top was one person.

Victor Lang.

Victor stepped back.

“You don’t understand what that proves.””

I looked at him.

“It proves you controlled the mission.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“It proves I knew about it.””

The room went quiet.

Victor looked at Daniel’s recording.

“I tried to stop it.””

Thomas laughed.

“After it was already happening?””

Victor looked at him.

“You think I wanted Daniel dead?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew anymore.

The video continued.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“The person who changed the mission was not Victor.””

Everyone froze.

Victor looked shocked.

Daniel continued.

“Victor knew about the operation. But he wasn’t the one controlling it.””

Ava looked confused.

“Then who?””

Daniel picked up another file.

The camera moved closer.

A signature appeared.

Authorization approved by:

Colonel Marcus Hale.

The room went silent.

Hale closed his eyes.

Ava turned toward him.

“No.””

I looked at Hale.

The man who had helped us.

The man who claimed he wanted the truth.

The man who gave us files.

“You knew.””

Hale looked broken.

“Yes.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“You changed the mission?””

Hale shook his head.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Hale looked at Daniel’s recording.

“I changed the mission after I discovered it had already been changed.””

Nobody spoke.

He continued.

“Daniel found the first betrayal. I found the second.””

Ava’s voice trembled.

“What second betrayal?””

Hale looked at her.

“The people behind it were planning to erase everyone involved.””

Including Daniel.

Including me.

Including Aaron.

Hale took a breath.

“I tried to move the team away from danger.””

Thomas stared.

“Then why hide everything?””

“Because the people controlling it were watching.””

Hale looked at Ranger.

“Daniel knew.””

The dog lifted his head.

“He told me if anything happened, Ranger would carry the truth.””

The video reached its final moments.

Daniel looked into the camera.

“If anyone finds this, remember one thing.””

A pause.

“The person who looks guilty may be the person who tried to save you.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Seven years of suspicion.

Seven years of anger.

Seven years of blaming the wrong people.

Then Ranger suddenly walked toward Hale.

Everyone watched.

The dog stopped in front of him.

Hale slowly reached down.

Ranger allowed him to touch his head.

Ava whispered:

“He knows.””

I nodded.

“He always knew.””

But before anyone could speak, the bunker alarm activated.

A red light flashed.

A hidden message appeared on the old computer.

WARNING.

FINAL FILE ACCESSED.

UNAUTHORIZED USER DETECTED.

Then another line appeared.

REMOTE CONNECTION ACTIVE.

Someone else was watching.

Someone who had been waiting for us to find the truth.
