Chapter 12: The Man Daniel Protected

The name on the screen changed everything.

Elias Voss.

My own.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Ava looked at me.

Thomas looked at me.

Even Ranger looked at me.

And for the first time in seven years, I felt the weight of a question I had avoided.

What if Daniel had suspected me?

“No,” Ava whispered.

I looked at her.

“You don’t know that.””

“My father trusted you.””

“So did I.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Because that was the truth.

I had spent years blaming myself for Daniel’s death.

But now I wondered if someone had been guiding me toward the wrong guilt.

Victor stepped closer.

“Daniel knew you would react exactly this way.””

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means he knew you would blame yourself.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

Victor looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

The archive door finally opened.

Not forced.

Opened.

A man walked inside.

Wearing a military uniform.

Older.

Calm.

Someone I recognized immediately.

General Aaron Blake.

The name from the scratched photograph.

The man Daniel had hidden.

Hale looked stunned.

“Aaron?””

Blake looked around the room.

“So everyone finally gathered.””

My hand tightened.

“You were alive.””

Blake nodded.

“Unlike the story they told.””

Ava stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Blake looked at Daniel’s daughter.

“The person your father tried to protect.””

Thomas stared.

“But Daniel suspected you.””

Blake looked at the screen.

“At first.””

I felt confused.

“What?””

Blake walked closer.

“Daniel created that list because he knew someone was watching. He needed to make the enemy believe certain people were guilty.””

He pointed at my name.

“Your name was there because Daniel trusted you the most.””

I stared.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does.””

Blake looked at Ranger.

“Daniel knew the only way to keep the truth alive was to make everyone believe the wrong person had failed.””

Ava’s voice shook.

“My father planned all of this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell us?””

Blake looked down.

“Because the person listening might not have been on our side.””

The room went silent.

Then Blake pulled out an old recording.

“Daniel left one final message.””

He pressed play.

Daniel appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But calm.

“Elias.””

My breath stopped.

“If you are seeing this, I need you to know something.””

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“You were never the person I suspected.””

I closed my eyes.

A wave of emotion hit me.

Daniel continued.

“You were the person I trusted to find the truth.””

Ava started crying silently.

Thomas looked away.

Then Daniel said the words that made everyone freeze.

“The betrayal came from someone who had access to every report.””

A pause.

“Someone who controlled the investigation.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone understood.

The enemy was not outside the unit.

Not overseas.

Not missing.

The enemy had been the person who decided what everyone was allowed to believe.

And then Blake looked at me.

“We finally know who changed the reports.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Blake turned toward the archive computer.

A new file appeared.

The creator’s name loaded slowly.

And when it appeared, even Victor Lang looked shocked.

Because the person who had rewritten Daniel Mercer’s final mission…

Was someone none of us expected.
