Chapter 3: The Truth Buried Alive
By sunrise, Colonel Marcus Hale was waiting for me.
He stood outside the command building like he had never left.
Like he knew I was coming.
Ranger stopped walking the moment he saw him.
The colonel noticed.
His expression changed for only a second.
But it was enough.
Fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
“You found something,” Hale said.
I kept my face calm.
“Why would you assume that?””
“Because Ranger only reacts like that when he remembers something.””
The answer surprised me.
“You know?””
Hale looked away.
“That dog remembers more than people realize.””
Ava stepped beside me.
“My father trusted Ranger.””
Hale looked at her.
And for the first time, his cold expression cracked.
“Your father trusted too many people.””
Ava’s eyes narrowed.
“You were his commanding officer.””
“Yes.””
“And you let everyone believe his mission failed.””
Hale said nothing.
That silence told me more than any confession.
Inside his office, Hale closed the door.
No cameras.
No witnesses.
Just three people and a dog carrying years of unanswered questions.
“You need to understand something,” Hale said.
“The official story was created to protect soldiers.””
Ava shook her head.
“No. It protected someone.””
Hale looked at her.
“You sound exactly like Daniel.””
“She was his daughter.””
“And that was his weakness.””
The words made Ranger stand.
A low warning sound came from his throat.
Hale stared at him.
“He did that the night before the mission.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Ranger sensed something was wrong.””
Hale walked to the window.
“Daniel wanted to cancel the operation.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Hale was silent.
Then he said:
“Because he believed someone inside the unit was working against us.””
Ava whispered:
“Who?””
Hale looked back.
“I never found out.””
I studied him carefully.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“No.””
His answer surprised me.
“I expect you to believe that Daniel was right.””
Hale opened a locked drawer and removed an old mission folder.
I immediately recognized it.
Daniel’s handwriting.
But there was something missing.
Pages had been removed.
“Someone accessed this after the mission,” Hale said.
“Who?””
Hale looked at the door.
“Thomas Reed.””
Ava stepped forward.
“My father’s death was investigated.””
“Not properly.””
“Why?””
Hale’s jaw tightened.
“Because the investigation team received edited information.””
The room went quiet.
Years of my life.
Years of believing I failed my friend.
All because someone changed the story.
Ranger walked toward the folder.
He sniffed the pages.
Then he pushed one page with his nose.
I picked it up.
At first, it looked blank.
Then I noticed a faint mark.
A hidden message.
Ava leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
I held the page under the light.
Three words appeared.
RANGER KNOWS EVERYTHING.
Ava covered her mouth.
Hale closed his eyes.
“I was afraid of this.””
I looked at him.
“Afraid of what?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked to the office door and locked it.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Because if that message survived…”
He looked at Ranger.
“…then the person who betrayed Daniel is still inside this command.””
A sudden sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Someone approaching.
Hale turned pale.
Not nervous.
Terrified.
The door handle moved.
Ava stepped back.
Ranger moved forward.
Ready.
The door opened slowly.
And the person standing there was someone none of us expected.
Thomas Reed.
May you like
Alive.
And holding the original mission file that was supposed to have disappeared forever.
