Chapter 8: The Name They Erased
I picked up the envelope slowly.
Nobody moved.
Because we all understood the same thing.
Someone had been close enough to leave it there.
Close enough to watch us.
Inside was a single photograph.
Not old.
Not damaged.
Recent.
It showed Colonel Marcus Hale entering a private building three days before Daniel’s mission.
Ava looked at Hale.
“You were meeting someone.””
Hale stared at the picture.
His face changed.
Not guilt.
Recognition.
“I know that location.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Where?””
Hale didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Command intelligence headquarters.””
The room became silent.
I looked at him.
“You met someone from intelligence before the mission?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Hale closed his eyes.
“Director Victor Lang.””
Thomas immediately reacted.
“Lang?””
I noticed his reaction.
“You know him?””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“He was the man who approved the mission.””
Ava looked between them.
“So the person who planned everything was connected from the beginning?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody wanted to say it.
But the evidence was pointing in one direction.
Daniel wasn’t killed because a mission failed.
He was killed because someone needed the mission to fail.
Hale looked at me.
“There is something else you need to know.””
I waited.
“Daniel discovered a second operation happening at the same time.””
Thomas frowned.
“What second operation?””
Hale looked at Ranger.
“One involving extraction of information from our own system.””
Ava whispered:
“Someone was stealing military secrets.””
Hale nodded.
“And Daniel found out.””
I looked at the photograph.
“Why hide this from everyone?””
Hale’s expression hardened.
“Because when Daniel tried to report it, the report disappeared.””
Thomas laughed bitterly.
“Of course it did.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I knew Daniel was investigating someone powerful.””
“And you said nothing?””
Thomas looked down.
“I tried.””
His voice became quieter.
“That was why I disappeared.””
Ava stepped closer.
“Explain.””
Thomas took a breath.
“After the mission, I found proof. I tried bringing it forward.””
“And?””
“They threatened my family.””
The room went silent.
“They told me if I kept searching, Ava would lose the only parent she had left.””
Ava froze.
“You knew about me?””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father talked about you every day.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Ranger walked toward Thomas.
The dog stared at him.
Thomas slowly reached down.
Ranger allowed him to touch his head.
Ava noticed.
“He trusts you.””
Thomas smiled sadly.
“Daniel taught him to.””
Then the archive computer suddenly activated.
Everyone turned.
The screen displayed one file.
NO LONGER CLASSIFIED.
Created today.
By user:
DANIEL MERCER.
Ava stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
I moved toward the computer.
The file opened automatically.
A video appeared.
Daniel.
Again.
But this time, he looked different.
More serious.
More afraid.
“If this message plays, it means someone finally found the hidden archive.””
He paused.
“Elias, I need you to listen carefully.””
My heart stopped.
Because Daniel was speaking directly to me.
“Do not trust the first person who appears guilty.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel continued.
“The betrayal was not one person.””
Ava looked confused.
“There were multiple people.””
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
“The person who exposed the operation was not our enemy.””
The video glitched.
A final image appeared.
A list of names.
Several names were highlighted.
One of them shocked me.
May you like
A name I never expected.
A name that belonged to someone standing in the room.
