Chapter 7: The Archive That Remembered

The old archive building looked exactly the same as it had seven years earlier.

Cold.

Empty.

Forgotten.

But as Ranger walked through the entrance, I realized something.

The building was not abandoned.

Someone had been here recently.

The dust on the floor had been disturbed.

The lock had been replaced.

And the security system that was supposed to be offline was quietly blinking.

Ava noticed it too.

“Someone has been using this place.””

I nodded.

“Recently.””

Behind us, Colonel Hale entered with Thomas.

For the first time, the four of us stood in the same room with the same goal.

Finding the truth.

Ranger moved deeper into the archive.

He ignored old equipment.

Ignored empty shelves.

Then he stopped beside a wall covered with old mission boxes.

He looked back at me.

Waiting.

I walked closer.

“What is it?””

Ranger pushed his nose against one specific box.

The label had almost faded away.

MISSION 47-B.

Daniel’s final operation.

I opened it.

Inside were old photographs, equipment logs, and mission notes.

But something was wrong.

The contents were incomplete.

Pages were missing.

Files removed.

Ava picked up a folder.

“My father’s handwriting.””

She opened it.

The first page was a personal note.

Not an official report.

A message.

Elias,

If you are reading this, it means they failed to erase everything.

My throat tightened.

Ava continued reading.

“Ranger was never trained to find explosives only. He was trained to recognize people.””

Thomas looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

I remembered Daniel’s words.

Trust him.

He remembers.

Ava turned the page.

The next line was written darker.

Someone inside the unit changed the mission parameters.

They wanted us to enter without knowing the real objective.

I stared at the sentence.

“What real objective?””

Before anyone answered, Ranger suddenly moved toward the back wall.

He scratched at an old panel.

I pushed against it.

Nothing happened.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Move.””

He pressed a hidden button beneath the shelf.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a military recorder.

Ava stared.

“My father hid this?””

Thomas nodded.

“He knew someone would search the obvious places.””

I picked up the recorder.

The battery was dead.

But the device looked untouched.

Seven years waiting.

We connected it to a portable charger.

The screen flickered.

One file appeared.

FINAL MESSAGE.

Nobody spoke.

I pressed play.

Daniel’s voice filled the room.

“If Elias is watching this, then Ranger brought him here.””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing my friend again hurt more than I expected.

Daniel continued.

“I need you to understand something. The mission report is a lie.””

Ava grabbed the edge of the table.

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“We were not attacked by enemy forces.””

The room froze.

“We were betrayed before we arrived.””

Thomas looked at Hale.

Hale said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“There are people inside our own command who changed the operation.””

Then came the sentence that made my blood run cold.

“The person giving the orders is not the person you think.””

The recording cut.

Ava stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas looked at the device.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“That’s why someone wanted this destroyed.””

Suddenly, the archive door slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood outside the glass window.

Watching us.

Then the lights went out.

Ranger immediately moved forward.

A shadow disappeared into the darkness.

I grabbed my flashlight.

“Stay here.””

Ava grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“That’s my father’s truth too.””

We moved together.

Through the dark hallway.

Following the sound of footsteps.

But when we reached the exit…

Nobody was there.

Only one thing remained.

A small envelope placed on the ground.

My name written across the front.
