Chapter 6: The Voice in the Recording
Nobody spoke.
The video played silently on the screen.
Daniel stood in a dark room overseas.
His uniform was dirty.
His face was exhausted.
But he was alive.
Ava watched her father with tears in her eyes.
She reached toward the screen.
“Dad…”
Thomas looked away.
I understood why.
Seeing Daniel alive for those few seconds was both a gift and a punishment.
Then Hale’s voice came through the speakers.
“Daniel, you don’t understand what you’re risking.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“I understand exactly what I’m risking.””
The video quality was poor, but the voices were clear.
“You’re asking me to ignore what happened,” Daniel said.
Hale replied:
“I’m asking you to protect your team.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. You’re asking me to protect someone else.””
The recording stopped.
Ava turned immediately.
“That’s it?””
Thomas nodded.
“The file was damaged.””
“But not enough,” I said.
I looked at Hale.
Because now I had a question.
Why was he hiding?
We returned to the command building.
Not secretly.
Not carefully.
We walked straight through the front entrance.
Hale was waiting.
He looked tired.
Older.
Like he had been carrying something heavy for years.
“You saw it.””
I didn’t answer.
Ava stepped forward.
“You talked to my father before he died.””
Hale closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“And you never told anyone?””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“Why?””
Hale looked at the floor.
“Because Daniel asked me not to.””
The answer shocked all of us.
Ava stared.
“My father trusted you?””
“Not completely.””
Hale looked at Ranger.
“But he knew I was trying to stop it.””
I stepped closer.
“Stop what?””
Hale walked to his desk and removed a small envelope.
“This.””
He handed it to me.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Daniel’s handwriting.
My hands tightened.
The message was short.
Elias,
If they tell you Ranger failed, they are lying.
He didn’t fail the mission.
He completed it.
I read the words again.
Completed it.
Ava looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
Before I could answer, Hale spoke.
“Daniel discovered the mission was never designed to succeed.””
The room went silent.
“It was designed to create a failure.””
Thomas looked angry.
“They wanted a reason.””
Hale nodded.
“A reason to remove certain people. A reason to erase certain records.””
I looked at the note.
“And Ranger was the only evidence left.””
Hale didn’t respond.
He didn’t need to.
The truth was becoming impossible to ignore.
Then the building alarm suddenly sounded.
Everyone turned.
A soldier rushed into the room.
“Colonel, we have a problem.””
Hale looked up.
“What happened?””
The soldier swallowed.
“Someone accessed the restricted archive.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
The soldier looked at me.
“Captain Voss…”
A pause.
“The access code belonged to Daniel Mercer.””
Ava went completely still.
“That’s impossible.””
But Ranger had already moved.
He walked toward the hallway.
Toward the archive.
The place where this all began.

And this time, he wasn’t searching for a hidden message.
He was leading us to something that had been waiting for seven years.
