Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Plan
The message stayed on my father’s phone screen.
Nobody spoke.
The bank office suddenly felt too small.
Too exposed.
I looked toward the glass walls.
Every person walking outside felt like a possible threat.
“Who sent it?”” I asked.
Daniel checked the number.
“Blocked.””
The bank manager looked concerned.
“Should we contact security?””
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
But I could tell something else was bothering him.
Something deeper.
“What are you thinking?””
He looked at me.
“I’m thinking this started before the dress.””
I already knew that.
But hearing him say it made it real.
We returned home that afternoon.
The house looked the same.
The same walls.
The same furniture.
But it didn’t feel like home anymore.
Vanessa was sitting in the living room.
Madison beside her.
Both of them immediately looked nervous when they saw us.
My father held up the bank documents.
“Why did you try to access another account?””
Vanessa’s face went blank.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
She stood.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
My father dropped the papers onto the table.
“Then explain your signature.””
She looked down.
And for a moment, fear crossed her face.
Madison noticed.
“Mom?””
Vanessa quickly recovered.
“This is a misunderstanding.””
I stepped forward.
“You keep saying that.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I understand exactly.””
Madison stood.
“Emily, stop acting like you’re the only one hurt.””
I looked at her.
“Did you know about the second account?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation answered everything.
My father saw it too.
“Madison.””
She looked away.
“Mom told me.””
My heart sank.
“About the account?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She started crying.
“She said she needed it.””
“For what?””
Madison didn’t answer.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“Enough.””
“No.””
My father stepped between them.
“This ends now.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You’re choosing her.””
He looked confused.
“She’s your daughter.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“And Madison is yours too.””
The words hung there.
My father looked hurt.
Because he realized something.
Vanessa had spent years creating a competition between us.
Making Madison believe loving me meant losing him.
Making me believe I had to fight for my place.
Then Madison whispered:
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Madison.””
But she continued.
“I wasn’t the one who found Emily’s passwords.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Madison looked at Vanessa.
“You did.””
Silence.
Vanessa’s expression turned cold.
“Be careful.””
Madison started crying.
“You said we were only taking the money.””
My father stared.
“What does that mean?””
Madison covered her face.
“I thought we were just proving a point.””
I felt sick.
“A point?””
She looked at me.
“Mom wanted Dad to stop seeing you as the perfect child.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So she destroyed my future?””
Madison shook her head.
“No.””
She looked terrified.
“She destroyed more than that.””
Everyone went silent.
My father stepped closer.
“What else did she do?””
Madison looked toward Vanessa.
Then whispered:
“She changed the college application emails.””
My blood froze.
“What?””
Madison cried harder.
“She didn’t want Emily leaving.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“You sabotaged my future?””
Vanessa didn’t deny it.
And that was the worst part.
My father took a step back.
“You tried to stop her from going to college?””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“You were taking her away from us.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You were afraid I would leave and realize I never needed you.””
Her face changed.
Because I was right.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, he went completely still.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
“Send me the file.””
He hung up.
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“The university just contacted me.””
My heart started racing.
“What did they say?””
My father swallowed.
“They found evidence that someone tried to withdraw your enrollment.””
I froze.
“Who?””
He looked at the screen.
May you like
Then said the name that made the entire room go silent.
“Vanessa.””
