Chapter 4: The Money That Vanished

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The only sound in the kitchen was the ticking clock above the refrigerator.

My father stood there holding his phone, staring at the screen like he was hoping the words would change.

They didn’t.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Madison.

Neither of them looked surprised.

That hurt more than the accusation itself.

Because it meant there was a secret I had been living inside without knowing.

“Dad,” I said quietly, “what college savings account?””

Daniel looked at me.

The sadness in his eyes made my stomach twist.

“The account your grandmother started when you were twelve.””

I froze.

“My grandmother?””

He nodded.

“She wanted to make sure you had something set aside for your future. Every birthday, every holiday, she added money. I added money too.””

I swallowed.

“I thought I had student loans.””

“You shouldn’t have needed them.””

His voice cracked.

“You had almost sixty thousand dollars.””

The room tilted.

“Had?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

I felt my hands start shaking.

“What happened to it?””

Daniel looked down at his phone.

“The bank called me because there was suspicious activity. Multiple withdrawals over the last six months.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t do this in front of Emily.””

I looked at her.

“Why not?””

She avoided my eyes.

“Because she’s emotional.””

I almost laughed.

“Funny. You weren’t worried about my emotions when Madison burned my dress.””

Madison rolled her eyes.

“You’re still talking about that?””

My father turned toward her.

“Yes.””

His voice was cold.

“You burned something she bought with her own money.””

Madison crossed her arms.

“And now you’re accusing us of stealing?””

Nobody answered.

Because my father’s silence said enough.

He opened the banking app.

“There were transfers.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“What kind of transfers?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You tell me.””

She said nothing.

My father walked closer.

“Emily’s account had no withdrawals until January.””

He tapped the screen.

“Then suddenly, money started moving.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Forty thousand dollars.””

I covered my mouth.

Forty thousand.

Money I had spent years believing would help me start my life.

Money my grandmother had saved for me.

Gone.

“Who had access?”” I whispered.

My father looked at the screen.

“The account was linked to the family banking profile.””

I stared at him.

“So someone in this house.””

Silence.

Madison looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“Dad, maybe someone hacked it.””

My father looked at her.

“Someone who knew the password?””

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

And so did he.

“Madison.””

She looked away.

“What?””

“Where were you when the first transfer happened?””

She laughed nervously.

“Why are you asking me?””

“Because the bank has login records.””

The room went completely quiet.

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“You checked?””

“Yes.””

My father looked at me.

“The account was accessed from a device registered to this house.””

I felt sick.

A device.

Not a stranger.

Not some random criminal.

Someone I ate dinner with.

Someone who smiled at me every day.

I looked at Madison.

“Was it you?””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You really think I would steal from you?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I remembered every time something disappeared from my room.

Every time my things were moved.

Every time Vanessa told me I was being dramatic.

Madison looked at Vanessa.

“Mom, say something.””

Vanessa remained silent.

That silence destroyed her.

My father noticed.

“Why aren’t you defending her?””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Because you’re making accusations without proof.””

Daniel lifted his phone.

“I have proof.””

He opened another file.

A recording.

A video.

The same security system.

Except this time, it wasn’t from the backyard.

It was from the upstairs hallway.

I stepped closer.

The video showed Madison entering my room.

Holding a small notebook.

My notebook.

The one where I kept my scholarship information, passwords, and important documents.

My breathing stopped.

“She went through my things.””

Daniel nodded.

“She did.””

The video continued.

Madison sat at my desk.

She opened the notebook.

Then she took pictures of pages with her phone.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

I watched my stepmother look around.

Then she smiled.

My stomach turned.

“What are they doing?””

My father didn’t answer.

Because the video answered for him.

Madison whispered something.

The audio was low.

Daniel increased the volume.

And then we heard it.

“Once the money is gone, she won’t have any reason to leave us.””

I felt like the air disappeared.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Emily—”

“No.””

My voice came out stronger than I expected.

“You knew.””

She stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand everything.””

My father turned away.

His face was full of pain.

Then his phone buzzed again.

Another message.

He looked at it.

And his expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He didn’t speak.

He just handed me the phone.

There was a photo attached.

A photo of a bank document.

And at the bottom was a signature.

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.

May you like

And underneath the signature was the date.

The date was three months before I turned eighteen.
