Chapter 14: The Final Piece Of Evidence

We met Richard at an old office building downtown.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

The windows were dusty.

The hallway lights flickered.

My father walked beside me.

Not ahead.

Beside me.

For the first time in months, I didn’t feel like I was following someone else’s decisions.

I was part of my own story.

Richard was waiting inside.

He smiled when we entered.

A calm smile.

Like he wasn’t facing the people whose lives he had destroyed.

“Daniel.””

My father looked at him.

“You knew.””

Richard leaned back.

“I knew you would eventually find out.””

I felt anger rise.

“You ruined my life.””

Richard looked at me.

“You don’t understand the bigger picture.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone said that.

Everyone who hurt me always believed they had the right to decide what I understood.

“You manipulated my family.””

Richard smiled slightly.

“I exposed weaknesses that already existed.””

My father stepped forward.

“You used my wife.””

Richard shrugged.

“Vanessa wanted what she wanted.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Because they were true.

Vanessa made choices.

Madison made choices.

But Richard had created the opportunity.

My father placed the files on the table.

“You forged documents.””

Richard looked at them.

“Yes.””

The admission stunned me.

He didn’t even deny it.

“You stole money.””

“Yes.””

My father’s hands tightened.

“Why?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because you were never supposed to leave me behind.””

“What?””

Richard laughed.

“You built that company with me.””

My father stared.

“You mean the company I bought you out of?””

Richard’s expression changed.

There it was.

The real reason.

Years of resentment.

“You got everything.””

Richard stood.

“The success. The family. The respect.””

My father shook his head.

“So you destroyed my daughter?””

Richard looked at me.

“I needed leverage.””

I felt sick.

“You saw me as a tool.””

“No.””

He smiled.

“I saw you as the one thing Daniel would always protect.””

My father stepped forward.

“You’re done.””

Richard laughed.

“Are you sure?””

He reached into his desk drawer.

My father immediately moved.

But Richard pulled out a folder.

He placed it on the table.

“Your mother’s case.””

Nobody moved.

My hands started shaking.

Richard pushed it toward me.

“You want the truth?””

I looked at Daniel.

Then opened it.

Inside were reports.

Photos.

Messages.

And one document.

A police report.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The name.

The witness.

I looked up.

“This…”

My voice disappeared.

My father took the paper.

His face changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He read the name again.

Then whispered:

“This can’t be.””

Richard smiled.

“You spent years looking for the person who caused the accident.””

The room went silent.

“But you never looked close enough.””

My father stared at the document.

Because the witness wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone connected to our family.

Someone who had been in our lives for years.

My hands went cold.

“Who?””

Richard leaned closer.

May you like

Then said:

“The person who told you it was an accident.””
