Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Deleted Video
The video played silently.
But I could hear my own heartbeat.
The screen showed our living room.
Three weeks earlier.
I remembered that day.
I had been at work.
I thought the house was empty.
But the footage showed Madison standing in front of my bookshelf.
Holding one of my college acceptance letters.
My breath caught.
“That’s impossible.””
My father looked at me.
“You knew about this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
On the video, Madison opened the envelope.
She read the letter.
Then she laughed.
Not a normal laugh.
A cruel one.
“She knew?”” I whispered.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“She knew about your scholarship?””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
The video continued.
Madison walked into the kitchen where Vanessa was waiting.
My stepmother watched her place the letter on the counter.
“She got accepted,” Madison said.
Vanessa didn’t look surprised.
Instead, she said something that made my entire body go cold.
“Then we need to make sure she doesn’t get too comfortable.””
I covered my mouth.
“No…”
Daniel looked devastated.
The video continued.
Madison asked, “What if Dad finds out?””
Vanessa answered immediately.
“He won’t.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
The kitchen felt smaller.
My father slowly lowered his phone.
“Emily…”
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked different.
For the first time, she didn’t look confident.
She looked caught.
“You need to explain.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not what it sounds like.””
My father laughed once.
A painful sound.
“I heard exactly what it sounded like.””
Madison stepped forward.
“Dad, Mom was just upset.””
I looked at her.
“Upset about what?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Answer her.””
Madison looked away.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“Don’t say anything.””
That sentence told me everything.
My father noticed too.
His face changed.
“Why would you tell her not to answer?””
Vanessa stayed silent.
I felt tears building.
“All these years…”
I looked between them.
“All these years I thought I was imagining things.””
Daniel walked toward me.
“You weren’t.””
Those words hurt more than anything.
Because I had spent years questioning myself.
Maybe I was too sensitive.
Maybe I was jealous.
Maybe I was overreacting.
But I wasn’t.
They knew.
They had always known.
Madison suddenly grabbed her phone.
“This is insane.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Where are you going?””
“I’m leaving.””
“No.””
She stopped.
“You don’t get to walk away from this.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You’re really choosing her over me?””
My father stared at her.
“I’m choosing not to ignore what happened.””
Vanessa stepped between them.
“You’re destroying this family over one mistake.””
I looked at her.
“One mistake?””
My voice shook.
“The dress.””
“The books.””
“The letters.””
“The way you made me feel like I was a guest in my own home.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You were never grateful.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Daniel looked shocked.
Vanessa continued.
“Madison grew up here. She needed stability.””
“And I didn’t?””
“You already had your father.””
The words cut deeper than she probably intended.
Because suddenly I understood.
She never saw me as her daughter.
Only as someone taking space away from Madison.
Daniel stepped back.
His expression changed completely.
Then his phone rang.
He looked down.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
His face slowly lost color.
“Wait…”
He looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
“Are you sure?””
Nobody moved.
My father ended the call.
His hand was shaking.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at the three of us.
Then he said something that made Madison sit back down.
“Someone just sent me another video.””
I felt a chill run through me.
“What video?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The one from the night your college savings account was accessed.””
My heart stopped.
Because I had no idea what he was talking about.
“What savings account?””
My father looked at me.
“The one with the money you earned for college.””
The room went silent.
Then he looked directly at Vanessa and Madison.
“And apparently, the person who emptied it wasn’t a stranger.””
Vanessa’s face turned white.
May you like
And Madison whispered something that I almost didn’t hear.
“Mom… you said he would never find out.””
