Chapter 11: The Files Hidden In The House

The word hung in the air.

Recordings.

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t look surprised.

That terrified me.

“You recorded me?””

Vanessa said nothing.

My father’s voice was quiet.

“Answer her.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“Stop saying that.””

His anger finally broke through.

“Everyone in this house has used that sentence to avoid telling the truth.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse tighter.

“I was protecting myself.””

“From my daughter?””

“She was becoming difficult.””

I stared at her.

“Difficult?””

Her eyes met mine.

“You questioned everything.””

I almost smiled.

Because that was the first honest thing she had said.

I did question everything.

Because something always felt wrong.

My father looked around the house.

“Where are the recordings?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Madison looked nervous.

“Mom kept them.””

“Where?””

Madison hesitated.

“In her closet.””

My father walked upstairs.

Vanessa immediately followed.

“Daniel, don’t.””

He turned.

“Why?””

She had no answer.

We all followed him.

My father opened Vanessa’s closet.

At first, it looked normal.

Clothes.

Shoes.

Boxes.

Then he noticed something behind a row of handbags.

A small locked case.

My heart started pounding.

He pulled it out.

“Open it.””

Vanessa stayed silent.

“Open it.””

She shook her head.

My father grabbed the key from the table beside her makeup mirror.

The box opened.

Inside were dozens of files.

Printed papers.

USB drives.

Notebooks.

My hands covered my mouth.

“What is all this?””

My father picked up the first file.

The label read:

“Emily.””

I felt sick.

He opened it.

Pages and pages.

Notes about me.

My habits.

My grades.

My friendships.

My conversations.

“This is insane.””

Vanessa looked defensive.

“I was keeping records.””

“For what?””

She didn’t answer.

My father picked up a USB drive.

“What’s on this?””

Nobody spoke.

He connected it to his laptop.

The first video appeared.

It was from our kitchen.

Me.

Crying.

Talking about my graduation.

Talking about how alone I felt.

Vanessa had recorded it.

Then another video.

Me arguing with Madison.

Another.

Me asking my father why Vanessa treated me differently.

My face burned.

She had collected my pain.

Saved it.

Stored it.

For what?

Then my father found a folder.

A folder that made his expression change.

“What?””

He clicked it.

Inside were documents.

Fake screenshots.

Edited messages.

Made to look like I was disrespectful.

Unstable.

Ungrateful.

I stared.

“She was building a case against me.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“Because nobody would believe me otherwise.””

“Believe what?””

“That Emily was the reason this family was falling apart.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“You blamed me.””

She looked at me.

“You always made people choose.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You made people choose.””

The room went quiet.

Then my father found one final file.

A video.

The date was from six months ago.

Before the money disappeared.

He clicked play.

The screen showed Vanessa and someone else sitting at a restaurant.

Someone I recognized.

My father leaned closer.

His face changed.

“Who is that?””

I looked at the screen.

And my blood ran cold.

Because sitting across from Vanessa was the person who had been helping her.

The person she trusted enough to reveal everything to.

May you like

My father whispered:

“That’s my business partner.””
