Chapter 5: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I stared at the document on my father’s phone.

My name was written across the bottom.

Emily Carter.

The signature looked almost identical.

Almost.

But I knew.

I knew because I had never signed that paper.

“This isn’t mine.””

My voice barely came out.

Daniel looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

I looked up sharply.

“Yes.””

I pointed at the screen.

“I know my own signature.””

Nobody spoke.

Madison shifted uncomfortably.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“This is getting ridiculous.””

I turned toward her.

“Someone forged my signature.””

She sighed.

“You’re accusing your own family.””

“No.””

I looked directly at her.

“I’m asking who did it.””

My father took the phone back.

“The bank sent this because they found irregularities.””

“Meaning?””

“Meaning someone may have used false authorization.””

The word hung in the air.

False authorization.

Forgery.

I looked at Madison.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

And that told me something.

She knew more than she was saying.

“Madison.””

She didn’t answer.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, she raised her eyes.

“Did you know about this?””

Her lips parted.

Then Vanessa stepped in.

“Don’t pressure her.””

I stared at my stepmother.

“Why are you protecting her?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Because she’s my daughter.””

The answer hurt.

Because it was honest.

For years, I had hoped she saw me the same way.

But she didn’t.

My father looked at her.

“And Emily?””

Vanessa went silent.

Daniel shook his head.

“I can’t believe you.””

The kitchen became unbearable.

Then Madison suddenly stood.

“I didn’t take all of it.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

Her face turned pale.

“I said I didn’t take all of it.””

My father stared.

“Madison.””

She started crying.

“I only helped.””

Vanessa immediately grabbed her arm.

“Stop talking.””

My father stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

Madison looked at her mother.

Vanessa’s eyes warned her.

But for the first time, Madison ignored her.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

I felt anger rising.

“Like what?””

She wiped her tears.

“Mom said you were leaving anyway.””

I laughed.

A painful, empty laugh.

“Leaving?””

“She said after graduation you’d move away. Go to college. Start your own life.””

“And?””

Madison looked down.

“She said Dad would spend less time worrying about you.””

My father closed his eyes.

Like every word physically hurt him.

“So you stole her future because you thought she wouldn’t be here?””

Madison shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

Her answer came quietly.

“Because Mom said you already had everything.””

I looked around the kitchen.

Everything.

That word.

They had convinced themselves I had everything because my father loved me.

Because I worked hard.

Because I had dreams.

They saw my happiness as something taken away from Madison.

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Did you plan this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was her answer.

Daniel walked away from her.

“I gave you everything.””

She followed him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No, Vanessa.””

He turned around.

“I understand perfectly.””

“You always made Madison feel second place.””

“And your solution was to destroy Emily?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think Emily is innocent?””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa pointed at me.

“You don’t know what it’s like living with someone everyone praises.””

My father looked disgusted.

“She was a child.””

“She was always better than Madison.””

The room went silent.

I felt something break inside me.

Not because she hated me.

Because she had never tried not to.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?””

His expression changed.

He listened.

Then he looked at me.

“Can you send that again?””

A pause.

“Thank you.””

He hung up.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He looked at the document.

“The bank found another record.””

My stomach tightened.

“What record?””

He took a deep breath.

“The person who created the fake signature didn’t just steal the money.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“They changed the account ownership.””

My blood ran cold.

“Changed it to who?””

Daniel slowly turned his phone around.

The new account owner was listed.

My name wasn’t there.

Neither was my father’s.

May you like

It belonged to someone else.

Someone in our family.
