Chapter 13: The Truth About That Night

The room felt colder after Richard’s message.

Not because of the words.

Because of the way my father reacted.

Daniel Carter was a man who could stand in front of hundreds of employees and make difficult decisions without hesitation.

I had seen him handle lawsuits.

Business failures.

Impossible situations.

But now he looked terrified.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed on the phone.

On those words.

“Ask Emily about the night her mother died.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does he know?””

My father slowly sat down.

I had never seen him look this defeated.

“Emily…”

I hated that pause.

The pause before someone tells you something that changes your life.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother’s accident wasn’t as simple as I told you.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air disappeared.

I was seventeen when my mother died.

A car accident.

That was the story I had been given my entire life.

Rain.

A slippery road.

A truck that crossed the line.

A tragedy nobody could change.

“What are you saying?””

My father looked down.

“I found out later there were questions.””

My voice shook.

“Questions?””

He nodded.

“The police investigated.””

“And?””

He swallowed.

“They found something unusual.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you were thirteen.””

The answer made me angry.

Not because he wanted to protect me.

Because everyone kept making decisions about what I could handle.

Everyone kept hiding the truth.

“You all decided I didn’t deserve to know.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

My voice cracked.

“And somehow it always leaves me hurt.””

He looked broken.

“You’re right.””

That honesty stopped me.

He continued.

“Your mother had been receiving threats before the accident.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“She thought someone was trying to scare her.””

“Who?””

He looked toward the phone.

My stomach dropped.

“Richard?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I never found proof.””

I stepped back.

“So you knew something was wrong.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let Richard stay in your life?””

His face filled with regret.

“I didn’t know it was him.””

The room went quiet.

Then Madison spoke softly.

“Mom knew.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Madison.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“I’m done protecting you.””

My father stared.

“What do you mean she knew?””

Madison wiped her tears.

“Mom found old documents.””

“What documents?””

“About Emily’s mother.””

I felt dizzy.

Vanessa stood.

“Stop.””

But my father stepped forward.

“No.””

Madison continued.

“She said if Dad ever found out the truth, everything would fall apart.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What truth?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

And that was when I knew.

She had been hiding something bigger than money.

Bigger than graduation.

Bigger than college.

My father turned toward her.

“Tell us.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know what Richard was planning.””

Nobody spoke.

“But I knew he was involved with your mother’s case.””

My heart stopped.

“My mother?””

She nodded.

“Years ago, before I married Daniel, Richard came to me.””

My father looked confused.

“Why would he come to you?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because he knew I was struggling.””

I felt sick.

“He used you.””

She nodded.

“He told me Daniel would never choose me over his past.””

My father looked devastated.

“And you listened to him?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father asked the question everyone was thinking.

“What did Richard want?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

“He wanted your father to stop searching.””

“Searching for what?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“The person responsible for your mother’s accident.””

The room went completely silent.

My father’s phone buzzed.

Another message.

Richard.

A location.

And one sentence:

“Come alone if you want the truth.””

My father stared at it.

Then I took the phone from his hand.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I looked at Daniel.

“He doesn’t get to control the ending.””

My father stared.

“What are you saying?””

I looked at the evidence.

The files.

The recordings.

The documents.

Everything they used to make me feel powerless.

Then I said:

“We go together.””
