Chapter 12: The Betrayal Beyond Our Home
Nobody spoke after seeing the video.
My father watched it again.
Then a third time.
Like he was trying to convince himself he was wrong.
But he wasn’t.
The man sitting across from Vanessa was Richard Hale.
My father’s business partner of twelve years.
The person he trusted with contracts.
Investments.
Everything.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did he know?””
My father didn’t answer.
That was worse.
Because he was thinking.
Remembering.
Connecting pieces.
Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.
She looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Exhausted.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
My father turned toward her.
“Then explain.””
She looked down.
“Richard told me you were planning to leave me.””
My father froze.
“What?””
“He said you were unhappy.””
I stared.
“And you believed him?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I was scared.””
“So you destroyed me?””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t mean for it to go this far.””
I laughed quietly.
“People always say that after they get caught.””
My father looked at the video.
“What was Richard helping you with?””
Vanessa stayed silent.
Then Madison spoke.
“He said he could make sure Dad wouldn’t choose Emily.””
My father looked at her.
“Madison.””
She cried.
“I didn’t know what he meant.””
I believed her.
For the first time, I saw fear in her eyes instead of jealousy.
My father played the video again.
This time, he increased the volume.
The conversation became clearer.
Richard leaned forward.
“You need leverage.””
Vanessa replied:
“What kind of leverage?””
“Something that makes Daniel doubt her.””
The video continued.
“Make him question whether Emily is really the victim.””
My stomach turned.
They had planned it.
Not one moment.
Not one mistake.
A plan.
My father stood suddenly.
“I need to call him.””
Vanessa looked alarmed.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She realized what she had revealed.
My father stared.
“You’re afraid of him.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
But before he could call, his laptop made a notification sound.
An email.
From Richard.
My father opened it.
His face changed.
“What?””
He read silently.
Then he looked at me.
“Richard knows we found the files.””
“How?””
Nobody answered.
The email contained one sentence.
“You should have left the past alone.””
Then an attachment appeared.
A photograph.
My father opened it.
The image showed our house.
Taken from outside.
Taken that morning.
And in the reflection of the window was someone standing across the street.
Watching.
My heart started racing.
“Dad…”
He zoomed in.
The person disappeared before we could identify them.
Then another message arrived.
This time from Richard.
“Ask Emily about the night her mother died.””
I froze.
My father dropped the phone.
Because I had never told anyone this.
Nobody knew.
Not even him.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does he mean?””
My father’s face went pale.
May you like
And for the first time since all of this began…
He looked afraid of the answer.
