Chapter 10: The Future She Tried To Steal

The name echoed through the room.

Vanessa.

Again.

I had spent years wondering why every good thing in my life somehow became a problem.

Why my achievements created tension.

Why my happiness seemed to make people angry.

Now I finally had the answer.

Someone had been trying to shrink my world.

And that someone was standing ten feet away from me.

My father stared at Vanessa.

“You contacted the university?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

She looked at him.

“Because you refuse to listen.””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“Because you refuse to admit what you did.””

I watched her face.

The confidence she always carried was gone.

For the first time, she looked cornered.

“What exactly did you send?”” my father asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

My hands clenched.

“I want to know.””

She finally looked at me.

“You were leaving.””

That was her explanation.

Not an apology.

Not regret.

A reason.

“You were going to college. You were going to build a life without us.””

I stared at her.

“That’s the point of college.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I understand perfectly.””

Madison sat quietly on the couch.

She looked smaller than she ever had before.

My father noticed.

“Madison, what did she do?””

Madison wiped her eyes.

“Mom created an email account.””

My stomach dropped.

“For what?””

“She pretended to be Emily.””

I felt dizzy.

“She emailed the university?””

Madison nodded.

“She said Emily wanted to delay enrollment.””

My father closed his eyes.

“How long?””

Madison whispered:

“Almost two months.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You almost ruined my acceptance.””

She didn’t deny it.

“I thought you would change your mind.””

My voice shook.

“You thought destroying my opportunity would make me stay?””

The silence answered.

My father walked away.

He looked like he was trying not to break.

“I married you.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I know.””

“I trusted you around my daughter.””

Her expression changed.

“You always made her the priority.””

Daniel turned around.

“She was my daughter.””

“And I was your wife.””

The words came out bitter.

My father stared.

“You made it a competition.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She always won.””

I felt something strange.

Not anger.

Not anymore.

Just sadness.

Because I realized she had spent years fighting a battle I never knew existed.

And she had made me the enemy.

My phone buzzed.

A notification.

I looked down.

An email.

From the university.

My heart stopped.

I opened it.

The message was short.

“Dear Emily Carter, after reviewing recent account activity and communication records, we have restored your original enrollment status. We have also identified unauthorized attempts to interfere with your admission.””

I exhaled.

For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe.

Then I saw the last sentence.

“However, we discovered the interference was not limited to your enrollment.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

“What is it?””

I read the next line.

“Additional documents were submitted using your identity.””

My stomach tightened.

“What documents?””

I scrolled.

And froze.

A withdrawal request.

A request to cancel my scholarship.

My scholarship.

The one I had earned.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You tried to take everything.””

She looked away.

Madison whispered:

“Mom…”

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“You don’t know what I had to do.””

My father looked shocked.

“What does that mean?””

She grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

Daniel stepped in front of the door.

“No.””

She stared at him.

“You can’t keep me here.””

“I’m not.””

He looked at her.

“I’m asking you one question.””

She stopped.

“Where is the money?””

Her face changed.

“What money?””

“The forty thousand.””

Silence.

My father continued.

“The account records show only part of it went to expenses.””

My heart raced.

“Where did the rest go?””

Vanessa looked toward Madison.

And Madison immediately looked terrified.

I noticed.

“Madison.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But her voice wasn’t convincing.

My father stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Madison started crying.

“Mom said it was for something important.””

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She said she needed to protect herself.””

My father frowned.

“From what?””

Madison looked at me.

Then said:

“She said if Dad ever found out, she needed proof that Emily was unstable.””

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

“What?””

Madison covered her face.

“She was collecting things.””

“What things?””

Madison looked at Vanessa.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Recordings.””
