Chapter 6: The Person Who Owned My Future
The name on the screen felt impossible.
Vanessa Carter.
My stepmother.
For several seconds, I couldn’t even process it.
The woman who told me I was being dramatic.
The woman who watched my dress burn.
The woman who stood beside Madison while I cried.
She owned the account that was supposed to protect my future.
My father looked at her.
“Explain.””
Vanessa’s face had lost all color.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Madison looked at her mother.
“You told me it was just borrowing.””
I turned toward her.
“Borrowing?””
Madison looked terrified.
Vanessa snapped.
“Be quiet.””
“No.””
My father stepped between them.
“You don’t get to silence anyone anymore.””
Madison started crying.
“She said she would put it back.””
I stared at her.
“How much did you take?””
Madison looked down.
“I don’t know.””
My father’s voice became sharper.
“How much?””
“Forty thousand.””
The number echoed.
Forty thousand dollars.
My future.
My education.
My independence.
Gone.
Vanessa finally spoke.
“It wasn’t stealing.””
I looked at her.
“What do you call it?””
She straightened.
“I was managing the money.””
My father laughed in disbelief.
“You forged her signature.””
“I was helping the family.””
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You were helping yourself.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know what I sacrificed.””
I stared at her.
“What did I do to you?””
She looked at me.
And for a second, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she said something I would never forget.
“You made everything harder.””
I felt numb.
“I was a kid.””
“You were always the priority.””
My father stepped back.
Like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Vanessa.””
She continued.
“Madison felt invisible.””
“So you punished Emily?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The silence was enough.
I walked upstairs.
I didn’t want them to see me cry.
Not anymore.
In my room, I opened my closet.
The empty space where my graduation dress had been was still there.
But now I understood something.
The dress was never the real loss.
The dress was just the first thing they destroyed that I could actually see.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
My hands froze.
It was a picture.
A picture of Vanessa and Madison outside a bank.
The date was six months earlier.
The day the first transfer happened.
Under the photo was a message.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
My heart started pounding.
Another message appeared.
“Your stepmother didn’t act alone.””
I stared at the screen.
Then a third message came.
And that one made me stop breathing.
“Ask your father why he never told you about the account before.””
I looked toward the door.
Because suddenly, I had a new question.
One that scared me more than Vanessa and Madison.
May you like
Why had my father kept the account secret from me?
And what else had he been hiding?
