Chapter 9: The Witness Who Lied

The next morning, Dr. Bennett disappeared.

His office was empty.

His phone was disconnected.

And according to the hospital, he had submitted his resignation overnight.

Emily stared at the message from the hospital.

“He knew we found out.””

I nodded.

“He ran.””

She looked at me.

“Do you think he helped Ryan?””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to believe people weren’t capable of betraying someone who trusted them.

But I had learned something painful.

People could smile while destroying your life.

“I don’t know.””

Emily looked down.

“I hate that answer.””

“So do I.””

We spent the day looking through every document we had.

Every message.

Every piece of evidence.

Then my attorney found something.

A payment record.

From Ryan.

To Dr. Bennett.

Emily read it twice.

“He paid him?””

“Yes.””

Her face hardened.

“How long?””

My attorney looked at the dates.

“Three years.””

Three years.

Ryan had been planning this for three years.

Before he returned.

Before graduation.

Before he took Emily away from me.

Emily sat silently.

Then she whispered:

“I defended him.””

I sat beside her.

“You didn’t know.””

“But I believed him.””

I looked at her.

“That’s what he wanted.””

She wiped her tears.

“I hurt you.””

The words were quiet.

I wanted to tell her it didn’t matter.

But it did.

It mattered because I was human.

Because I had spent ten years loving her.

Because losing her hurt.

“You hurt me,” I admitted.

She looked down.

“But I never stopped loving you.””

Her eyes filled.

And for the first time since graduation, she reached for my hand.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman spoke.

“Daniel?””

“Yes?””

“My name is Karen Mills.””

I frowned.

“Who are you?””

“I worked with Sarah before she died.””

I sat up.

“What do you want?””

“I have something you need to see.””

Emily leaned closer.

The woman continued.

“Sarah left instructions with me.””

My heart stopped.

“Why didn’t you contact me before?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Ryan?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

I looked at Emily.

Karen lowered her voice.

“Daniel, Sarah didn’t just leave evidence.””

“What did she leave?””

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“Proof that Ryan was never Emily’s legal father.””

Emily’s eyes widened.

“What?””

I gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

Karen answered:

“Ryan’s name was removed from Emily’s records years ago.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Karen said:

“Because Sarah discovered Ryan had done something unforgivable.””

My heart pounded.

“What did he do?””

Karen took a breath.

“He didn’t leave your family.””

She whispered:

“He was forced out.””

I froze.

“By who?””

Karen’s answer came softly.

And it changed everything.

“By Sarah herself.””

The call ended.

Emily looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly, the question wasn’t why Ryan abandoned Emily.

The question was:

Why did Sarah make him leave?
