Chapter 6: The Secret Sarah Left Behind

We listened to the recording five more times.

Every time, Sarah’s voice broke me.

Not because she sounded afraid.

Because she sounded like she knew something terrible was coming.

Emily sat on the couch, holding the phone.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did I.

Sarah had always been careful.

She planned everything.

Even after she got sick, she organized bills, wrote instructions, and prepared documents.

But she never told me about Ryan.

Not like this.

“Why would Mom record something like that?”” Emily asked.

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

“Did she know he was coming back?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked at me.

“You really don’t know anything?””

The question wasn’t cruel.

It was scared.

I sat beside her.

“Emily, I wish I knew.””

For the first time in days, she looked at me like she was seeing me again.

Not as an enemy.

Not as a stranger.

Just as Daniel.

The man who raised her.

My phone buzzed.

A message from my attorney.

“Need you at office. We found another document.””

I showed Emily.

“I’m going.””

She stood.

“I’m coming too.””

I looked at her.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded.

“I need answers.””

At the office, my attorney placed a folder on the table.

“This changes everything.””

Inside was a copy of a private agreement.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

My hands went numb.

“What is this?””

My attorney looked at Emily.

“Your mother created a trust.””

Emily frowned.

“For me?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the papers.

The trust protected every dollar.

No one could access it without Emily reaching a certain age.

Except…

I turned the page.

There was an exception.

A temporary guardian.

Someone who could manage the account if Emily was unable.

The name was written below.

Ryan Walker.

Emily’s face went pale.

“Mom chose him?””

I looked closer.

Something was wrong.

The signature was dated months after Sarah’s death.

Again.

Impossible.

My attorney leaned forward.

“Someone altered these documents.””

Emily whispered:

“Why would someone do that?””

I didn’t answer.

Because a horrible thought was forming.

Someone wasn’t just stealing money.

Someone was rewriting Sarah’s final wishes.

My attorney pulled out another page.

“This is the part you need to see.””

I read it.

Then I froze.

Because at the bottom was a handwritten note.

Sarah’s handwriting.

Real handwriting.

The kind I knew.

It said:

“Daniel, if Ryan returns, do not let him near Emily’s inheritance. He is not the father he claims to be.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“What?””

I looked at her.

The room felt like it was spinning.

Sarah knew.

She knew Ryan would come back.

She knew he would try to take something.

My phone suddenly rang.

Emily looked at the screen.

Ryan.

She stared at the name.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

His voice came through.

“Emily, we need to talk.””

She looked at me.

“No.””

A pause.

Then Ryan’s tone changed.

“Your father just showed you documents, didn’t he?””

Emily froze.

“How did you know?””

Silence.

Then Ryan said:

“Because I know exactly what your mother wrote.””

My blood ran cold.

Emily stood up.

“How?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Because I was there the night she made them.””

The call ended.

Emily looked at me.

And for the first time, she looked afraid of Ryan.

But before we could process it, another message arrived.

A photo.

From an unknown number.

It showed Ryan standing outside Sarah’s hospital room the night before she died.

And beside him was someone else.

Someone I never expected to see.

May you like

Sarah’s doctor.

Holding the same folder we had just found.
