Chapter 11: The Father She Never Knew
Emily cried silently the entire drive home.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just quiet tears falling as she stared out the window.
I wanted to say something.
Anything.
But every word felt too small.
When we reached the house, she didn’t get out immediately.
“Daniel.””
I turned toward her.
“Yeah?””
“Were you ever going to tell me?””
The question broke me.
“Tell you what?””
“That Ryan wasn’t my father.””
I looked down.
“I didn’t know.””
She stared at me.
“You didn’t?””
“No.””
“Then Mom knew?””
I nodded slowly.
“She never told me.””
Emily wiped her face.
“So all this time…”
Her voice broke.
“I hated you because I thought you weren’t my real father.””
I reached for her hand.
“You never needed to be related to me.””
She looked at me.
“I know.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“I know that now.””
For a moment, we sat there.
The same way we used to when she was younger.
When she would tell me about school.
When she would ask impossible questions.
When she still believed I could fix anything.
Then my phone rang.
My attorney.
I answered.
“Daniel, we have a problem.””
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?””
“Ryan filed a claim.””
“What claim?””
“He’s trying to challenge the inheritance.””
Emily closed her eyes.
Of course.
Even after everything.
“He’s saying he was removed illegally.””
I looked at Emily.
“Can he do that?””
“Not if these documents are real.””
“And if they aren’t?””
A pause.
“Then we have a fight.””
After the call ended, Emily stood.
“I need to talk to him.””
I immediately shook my head.
“Emily—”
“No.””
Her voice was different.
Stronger.
“I need to hear him explain.””
I understood.
Because sometimes you need to hear a lie from someone’s own mouth before you can let it go.
We met Ryan at a restaurant the next evening.
He arrived confident.
Like he had nothing to fear.
Then he saw Emily’s face.
And his confidence disappeared.
“You know.””
Emily didn’t sit.
“You lied to me.””
Ryan looked at me.
Then back at her.
“Who told you?””
Emily laughed bitterly.
“That’s your first question?””
He tried to step closer.
“Emily, listen—”
“No.””
She held up the DNA results.
“You knew.””
His face changed.
For the first time, I saw fear.
“I can explain.””
“Explain why you let me hate Daniel.””
Ryan looked at me.
“He was never your real father.””
Emily’s eyes filled with anger.
“Neither were you.””
The restaurant went silent.
Ryan froze.
She continued.
“But he stayed.””
That sentence destroyed him.
“You weren’t there when I was sick.””
She stepped closer.
“You weren’t there when I graduated high school.””
“You weren’t there when I needed someone.””
Ryan’s expression hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Emily shook her head.
“I understand perfectly.””
Ryan looked at me.
“You poisoned her against me.””
I almost laughed.
“No.””
I looked at Emily.
“She finally learned the truth.””
Ryan stood.
“You think you won?””
Emily frowned.
“What?””
Ryan smiled.
A cold smile.
“You still don’t know everything.””
My body went tense.
“What are you talking about?””
He reached into his jacket.
Pulled out a small folder.
And placed it on the table.
“Ask Daniel why Sarah never told him the truth.””
Emily looked at me.
My heart sank.
Because there was one thing I hadn’t considered.
If Sarah knew Ryan wasn’t Emily’s father…
Then why had she never told me who was?
Ryan pushed the folder toward Emily.
“Open it.””
She looked at me.
Then opened it.
Inside was one piece of paper.
A birth record.
May you like
And at the bottom was a name.
A name none of us expected.
