Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Signature
I stared at the name on the document.
Sarah Carter.
My wife.
Emily’s mother.
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
It didn’t make sense.
Sarah was gone.
She couldn’t have changed anything two years after her death.
I called my attorney immediately.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
He paused.
“That’s why I kept investigating.””
I looked at the document again.
Sarah’s name was there.
Her signature.
Her authorization.
Everything looked real.
But something felt wrong.
“Daniel,” my attorney continued, “someone used your wife’s identity.””
I closed my eyes.
Someone had used Sarah.
Someone had turned the person I loved most into a weapon against me.
“Can you find out who?””
“We’re working on it.””
I ended the call and sat in silence.
Then I heard a knock.
I opened the door.
Emily stood there.
Alone.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
“You look tired,” she said.
I almost smiled.
“So do you.””
She looked down.
“I talked to Ryan.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?””
“He said you’re trying to turn me against him.””
“And what do you think?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
That answer hurt.
But it was honest.
And honesty was better than hatred.
I stepped aside.
“Come in.””
She entered the house slowly.
The same house where she grew up.
Her eyes moved around the room.
The pictures.
The furniture.
The memories.
“I forgot this place still smelled like Mom’s candles.””
My throat tightened.
“She picked them.””
Emily touched a framed photo.
It was Sarah, Emily, and me at the beach.
“We looked happy.””
“We were.””
She stared at the picture.
“Were you really?””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Happy being my father?””
The question surprised me.
“Emily…”
“I mean, you didn’t have to stay.””
I swallowed.
“No. I didn’t.””
“Then why?””
I sat down.
“Because one day you stopped being someone I was helping.””
I looked at her.
“You became my daughter.””
Her eyes filled slightly.
But she quickly looked away.
“I found something,” I said.
I handed her a copy of the document.
She studied it.
“What is this?””
“The account access change.””
She read the name.
Her face changed.
“Mom?””
“I know.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Exactly.””
She looked at me.
“So someone forged her signature?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
But then Emily noticed something.
She flipped the page.
“Wait.””
“What?””
She pointed.
“This date.””
I looked closer.
The request date was two years after Sarah died.
Then Emily whispered:
“Someone had access to Mom’s old documents.””
A chill went through me.
Because there was only one reason someone would need Sarah’s documents.
To pretend they were her.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Then a recording played.
Sarah’s voice.
My heart stopped.
“Daniel… if you’re hearing this, something went wrong.””
I froze.
Emily looked at me.
The recording continued.
“I need you to trust no one until you find the truth.””
Then another voice appeared.
A man.
Ryan.
My face went pale.
Emily heard it too.
The recording ended.
Neither of us moved.
Finally, Emily whispered:
“Dad…”
It was the first time she called me that since graduation.
I looked at her.
She looked terrified.
May you like
Because we both understood the same thing.
Ryan wasn’t the only person hiding something.
