Chapter 13: The Person Sarah Feared

The name Ryan whispered before leaving stayed in my mind all night.

Dr. Bennett.

The man who treated Sarah.

The man who gave us evidence.

The man who claimed he wanted to help.

The man Sarah had trusted.

Until she didn’t.

Emily sat across from me at the kitchen table, staring at the documents scattered between us.

“I don’t understand.””

Her voice was exhausted.

“Everyone lied.””

I looked at her.

“Not everyone.””

She gave a small, painful smile.

“You mean you.””

I nodded.

“I never lied about loving you.””

That silenced her.

Because that was the one thing neither Ryan nor anyone else could change.

Emily looked down at the papers.

“What did Mom find?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because the truth was becoming clearer.

Sarah wasn’t hiding things because she didn’t trust me.

She was hiding things because she was trying to protect me.

And Emily.

My phone rang.

It was Karen.

I answered quickly.

“Karen, we need to talk.””

“I know.””

Her voice sounded frightened.

“You met Ryan.””

“Yes.””

“Then you know he’s desperate.””

“What do you mean?””

A pause.

“Daniel, Ryan didn’t create this plan alone.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Who helped him?””

Karen whispered:

“Dr. Bennett.””

Emily looked at me.

I put the phone on speaker.

“What did he do?””

Karen took a breath.

“Years ago, Sarah discovered that Ryan was working with Bennett to alter financial records.””

My hands curled into fists.

“They stole from Emily?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t Sarah report them?””

“She tried.””

The answer shocked me.

“What?””

“Sarah went to the police.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“But there’s no record.””

“Because someone made sure it disappeared.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Emily.

“Who?””

Karen hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone inside the system.””

My stomach sank.

This was bigger than Ryan.

Bigger than money.

Sarah had been fighting something she couldn’t defeat alone.

After the call ended, Emily looked at me.

“We need to find Mom’s original files.””

I nodded.

The next morning, we searched through every box in the attic again.

This time, we weren’t looking for answers.

We were looking for proof.

After hours of searching, Emily found a hidden compartment inside an old photo album.

“Dad.””

I turned.

She held a small USB drive.

My heart started racing.

Sarah was careful.

She would never hide something without a reason.

We plugged it into my laptop.

One folder appeared.

“Emily.””

Inside were videos.

The first one was dated three days before Sarah died.

I clicked.

Sarah appeared on the screen.

She looked weak.

But determined.

“Daniel, if you are watching this, I’m sorry.””

My eyes filled immediately.

Sarah continued.

“I wanted to tell you everything. But I was afraid.””

Emily grabbed my hand.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“Ryan is not the biggest danger.””

A pause.

“He is only the person you can see.””

Then she said the words that froze us.

“The person behind this is someone you trust.””

The video ended.

Emily stared at the screen.

“Who?””

I didn’t know.

But then another file appeared.

A video recorded one day later.

And when I opened it, we saw Sarah sitting across from someone.

Someone whose face was hidden.

But whose voice was clear.

The voice said:

“You should have stayed quiet, Sarah.””

Emily gasped.

Because she recognized it.

May you like

I recognized it too.

It was the voice of the person we had trusted most.
